I eat these from time to time and they are pretty good. I keep some in the pantry just in case I get a hankering for hashbrowns.

A little dehydrated onion, a clove of garlic, and some olive oil. Or some ramps if you're lucky!

I buy the Hungry Jack (https://www.amazon.com/Hungry-Jack-Potato-Original-Hashbrowns/dp/B07985Z8YM) brand for home consumption. They are rehydrated with boiling water, but then they are to be sauteed in oil over high heat to brown them, else you're just eating boiled grated potatoes. Not very palatable. Trust me, you want that caramelization.

Other major downsides: unseasoned, so S&P + Heinz is desperately needed, and ketchup is v. heavy; it has no fat so caloric density is low to begin with; and they require a lot of water (+ fuel to boil the water) to rehydrate.

I never heard of saz'on, so good ole Google says it's a Spanish seasoning with a distinctive savory taste with a hint of brown , red hue.a garlicky spice, salt, cumin, coriander, garlic and oregano. I'm gonna have to put that on the grocery list.

The link that TexasBob gave says hot tap water is used to rehydrate 140degrees. Not much fuel used to heat to that temp. Use only enough water to rehydrate them.

I give them extra time to re-hydrate and drain any excess water (usually very little) then fry them crispy. More fragile than frozen or fresh so be gentle. To be honest I have only made them once on a car camping trip but many times at home. Salt, pepper and a little ketchup - breakfast heaven !!!!

Not at all sure why the OP had to go to Amazon and link to a case of hash browns.
These things have been sitting on the shelf at any decent grocery store since forever.
That said, from a backpacking standpoint, instant Mashed Potatoes are much easier to prepare.

WayneNot at all sure why you want to quash his burgeoning interest? Were your potatoes cold this morning? Some people like to actually cook while backpacking.

I like mashed potatoes as an appetizer before backpacker dinner or as part of shepherd's pie. Not particularly a breakfast food for me though. Now a nice plate of olive oil crisped and seasoned hash browns, maybe a bagel and an orange even along with a cup or two of hot tea, I might not roll out of camp until 11!

EXACTLY! I just tried them based on this thread n man o man.... these things are great. It says 7 servings on the package but after I tried m I can see how you can get stuffed on them pretty fast... maybe 4 good helpings in each.

How about making latkies with it? just fry some oninons and add it to them, fry till nice n crispy.

Here is another great find.... Kraft Easy Mac n Cheeze in singles packs
https://www.kraftmacandcheese.com/product/00021000671496/kraft-easy-mac-original-flavor-macaroni-cheese-dinner-387-oz-box

It says to boil the noodles for 5 minutes or whatever... I just poured in the boiling warter n let it sit for 5 minutes then added in the mix and it worked great. It came in a box of 6 singles but now I see they have 18 packs in a box. AND ITS CHEAP!

If you have a scale at home you could weigh it before adding the water and then after.

One of my favs for sure mac and cheese and any kind of meat!
(Literally)
I'll take summer sausage and cut slices and slide them up a stick and toasty them over a fire and mix with Mac and cheese. Like you said cheap, hearty ,satisfying. Great carb protein mix as well.

FYI, one of the major ingredients in the Goya version of Sazon is MSG. Knorr has a version with far less MSG.

Not sure why, but these always seem to be hard (even at home), as they like to adhere to the pan they are frying in more than anything else. Just a thought if you haven't had them to try them out first, rather than finding out while on the trail and then having a pan to try to clean up or carry out dirty...

(Mac n Cheese) why repacking them in a zip loc? they are in already in sealed small packages.

Yeah try cooking them on your trail stove at home first but.... your flame may be too hot n burning the butter or oil; or you are trying to turn it before it crisps n thats why they would stick in the pan. Im using an aluminum pan over a giga power camping stove...no sticking on a low flame (keep it below burning butter temp) , just nice crisping. It takes longer that way but the results are much better.

Yep low and slow is the way.

I like olive oil for the heat and non stick and I'll also mix in butter with the olive oil for the taste .

I've eaten the mac-n-cheese at home but not on trail. I usually just keep stuff in cups like that myself although they tend to pop open when stuffed.

what container?... these are in individual celophane packets with very little air... you must be thinking of something else.

you cook the noodles for 3 min n add in the cheeze mix packet. i make m in a paper cup n just let the noods sit in the boiled water for a few min n add in the flavor packet... that saves fuel. oh i like the sauce a bit thicker so i just use 1/2 cup water instead of 2/3rds

We've been consuming mass quantities of those dehydrated hash browns on our car camping trips forever (and even at home, though frozen ones are even better), but it never occurred to me to try them backpacking! Thanks.

On our more luxurious BP trips (meaning heavier), we take a small 4-ounce skillet, butter, tortillas and dehydrated eggs/sausage and make breakfast burritos, adding hash browns would be fantastic.

The real key is finding a decent dehydrated green chili to smother this all... haven't found that yet!

i never tried it but it looks like what the doctor ordered. Well, that's a start. And one of the key ingredients, thanks!.

But "green chili" (meaning a soup-like dish, like red chili but utterly different, maybe what most on here call "chili") contains a lot of ingredients, like pork, oil, flour and chicken broth (<- I just learned all of this myself, my wife makes a fine green). We just haven't found a complete dehydrated green chili (the soup-like version), and have thought about experimenting with dehydrating our own. But we're lazy....

I picked up some of these spuds in a box recently I think they were hungry Jack brand, they just caught me eye walking by because this thread I've been kinda craving them. They make a surprising amount of taters and I would bring them out hiking just transfer to freezer bags.

As far as the ova easy freeze dried eggs yeah buddy! So good taste just like real eggs you make at home light and fluffy not dry and hard like dehydrated :o.

You'd probably want to fry the taters for a few minutes first and then when they're a couple minutes away from being done add your scrambled eggs to completion and throw on some shredded cheddar oh yeah.
