Some choice signs up for auction and a rarity more rare than a summit sign (which are not sold), a 3D fiberglass model of the mountain. I knew of two, one in the headquarters building and one in the Roaring Brook porch, not sure how many others there were.

Friends of BSP is a big influencer and watchdog over the parks future. If not for them the Northern Peaks trail ( one of the most remote and spectacular hikes in the park) probably would not have been reopened.

How often do they replace these signs? I remember a similar auction just a couple of years ago.

Its an annual event. AMC in New Hampshire started it originally in the New England area. The signs with exposure above treeline wear out relatively quickly due rime ice and folks knocking the ice off in order to read them. My guess is some of the BSP signs are related to trail relocations or changes in length. I think BSP got new more accurate 3D models to replace the fiberglass versions.

I was considering bidding $50 on a White Mountains sign in their auction, but I then saw the bids were up to $4300+ !

There are some folks there with a lot of money.

Some old White Mountain trail guides sell for over $1,000 and they are less rare than a trail sign.

It all comes down to willing buyer/willing seller sets the price.

Last thing I knew MATC burns them.

gotta remember at the end of the day---this auction is a fundraiser.....

and i would bet that at least a portion if not all, of the final price could be a tax deduction.....

Its highly likely that the Old Bridal Path sign will sell for the most as the Franconia Ridge loop which includes Lafayette is generally rated the best day hike in the whites. I personally like the signs from above treeline locations that look sandblasted from the high winds and extreme winter conditions.

I looked that BSP auction a few days ago and there were not bids on the fiberglass model. Probably best suited to a museum unless someone has a lot of space in their house.
