It felt like a desert hiking over it in 104 degree temps in 1995. Drank so much water that day that the 4 liters I started the day with (to ensure I didn't run out until I got to clean water, didn't last to mid-afternoon. I was getting seriously dehydrated by the time we hit the road crossing where some trail angel leaves potable water.

Seems to me that the zone is going to need some topsoil first.

Frankly, I'd like to see the area left as is. It's a good example of just how fragile our environment is, and how easy we can screw things up big time.

I'll try to get over there this weekend and take a few.
In fact, I might have some on my camera now. I'll have to look.

Anther area near the trail in Tennessee, Ducktown/Copperhill had a similar fate from the copper smelting. It looked very similar, but scrub pines over the past several decades have begun to take hold. The Palmerton/Slatington area will recover, but it'll take time.

Anyone know what dusters are flying up there? The Air Tractors are awesome machines, doing everything from reseeding and fire suppression to regular dusting actions. They even make some armored models U.S. agents use for spraying choice Colombian crops.
