by a hiker or trail runner on the AT from 12 AM to 12 PM? Of course, no repetition of trail allowed.

I think Horton may have done a few 100 milers in his Fun Runs that he has done with a few trail-running friends.

That would be midnight to noon, 12 hours. Who keeps track?

45 miles hiking is my best in that time, with full pack.

That's pretty good Squeeky. If you string 40 days like that together you will almost make it to Georgia! :)

hardest i ever pushed in one day while backpacking was 16 miles in the eastern smokies. not on the at, but similar terrain.

walked a lot in the army carrying heavier gear than i carry now, but don't think i ever did more than about 12 miles at a shot... the time standard of 3 hours, iirc, was the killer. the whole bottom of my foot came off in the shower the next day...

In 1984, to raise funds for the nuclear arms freeze campaign, I walked just under 72 miles of the AT from near Lick Creek north to the New River bridge near Pearisburg. The event was "Legs Against Arms". It was from 12:00:01am until 11:42pm.

I also have done five 'Damascus by Dawn' hikes. 64 miles into Damascus within twenty-four hours (6am-6am).

I also did five 'Superhikes' in CT - 56 miles of the CT AT section in 24 hours (from midnight to midnight).

And then there was the 'Spring Stroll', a 150-mile, 72-hour walk north of the CT/NY state line.

Sam Swisher-McClure made it from Springer to Fontana Dam (163 miles)within 72 hours on his record attempt in 1999.

ahem <clearing throat sounds> 18 miles. But that's usually from 7am to 3pm. My best over 16 hours would probably be 25 miles. I'll try it this summer.

Make that 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM !

I'm curious, what is 12:00 AM, or 12:00 PM for that matter?

What happend to the meridan itself? That is, 12 NOON, which is neither AFTER noon nor BEFORE noon.

People screw up 12:00 noon all the time, so badly that insurance companies, courts, laywers, and people for whom it matters have to say 11:59 or 12:01, because otherwise no one really knows.

My biggest is the last 25 miles of the Foothills Trail...same terrain as the AT. About 13 hours, IIRC.

Weve done the Foothills in 3 days with full packs, which averages about 26 miles a day. While that isnt earth-shattering for many places, anyone that has hiked the FT knows that many portions are much harder than the Southern AT.

Like those steps climbing up from Lake Jocassee or climbing up to The Pinnacle (from either direction)?

My biggest mile day was from Hanover to Smarts Mountain from 9 AM to 9PM. That's about 24-26 miles - give or take - over some interesting terrain.

Well, I guess I'm in the wimp category here. I've only done one 20 mile day with full pack and that was last spring from a campsite a mile beyond Iron Mt. Shelter to a campsite past the VA-TN line by a side trail.

I did about 30 miles into Harpers Ferry in 99. It was through the rollercoaster and hot as heck. I then ended up staying in Harper's Ferry about 5 days. What a day! I know that Postal Worker in 99 hiked a lot and Jedi did a lot of high mile days!

I walked from my table at a local Indian restaurant to the AYCE buffet..twice!

(In all seriousness, what makes a long hike? Raw mileage? Supported vs unsupported. Elev gain? Day hikes? Backpacking? Etc. Etc.

Personally, my longest hike for sheer difficulty was the time my girlfriend and I at the time broke up (2000) after a friends' wedding. What a hike back to the car! :) )

Great question! Weather certainly has a lot to do with it. 20 miles in the heat & humidity of the East Coast in August could bring anyone to their knees. 20 miles at elevation in Colorado could do the same. 15 miles in a blinding snowstorm would be amazing. Especially with a full pack.

Personally, the hike from Speck Pond to East B Hill Road (14.9 miles) carrying a full pack and a stomach virus about did me in.

last year at the end of my thru i was feelin' groovy and at 3:30pm in Stratton, Maine I felt like hikin'... hikin' i did.. and a little swimmin'.. arrived at Monson somewhere around 4pm.. (just know i managed to get my mail drop at the post office before 4:30pm) Then turned around and went an extra 3 miles into the hundred mile wilderness where I decided i'd take a nap at the shelter.. hah. i was tired. and it was pouring. So, total that was about 74 miles.. but in a little over 24 hours.. so in 24 hours it was probably about 68 or so. It was an awesome time.:D

Fall of '04 I was arising around 6:30 AM at the Fontana Hilton when a hiker stumbled in having hiked southbound for 24 hours from Ice Water Springs shelter. Less than 40 miles but up to Clingman's Dome, over other rolling peaks including Thunderhead all in the dark - I found that quite impressive but he was deprived of views for all his night hiking.
