The wife and I are going to hike the section between Gorham (maybe Pinkham Notch) and Rangely starting the weekend before the 4th of July. We're trying to figure out the best way to hike it in terms of logistics and transportation. We're gonna need to fly into somewhere reasonably close, catch a shuttle/bus to either Gorham or Rangely, hike to the other end and then catch a shuttle/bus back to that airport (if at all possible).
Anyone who knows this area really well able to give me some idea of my options ??
Thanks in advance ...

If you are hiking around White Mountains National Forest, the AMC shuttle has regular stops around the area.

For other transportation try Arthur Jolin, White Mountain Tour Service. This is a one man private shuttle that operates out of Gorham. 603-466-2127. He charges around $35.00/hr and will take you most anywhere you want to go. We hired him last year and he did a good job.
Hope you have a great trip!
Footslogger,
Fly into Boston or Manchester
Take Concord Trailways bus to Gorham.
Hire Arthur Jolin to drive you to Rangeley, Andover or any other trailhead or your choice. Walk back to Gorham (or Pinkham).
Take Concord Trailways from Gorham (or Pinkham) back to the airport. Here's the URL for Concord Trailways: http://www.concordtrailways.com/berlin_conway_newhampshire_bus_schedule.htm
Arthur Jolin's contact info is shown above.
The AMC shuttle loops from Pinkham to the Highland Center, stopping at the trailheads along the way. It's a local bus only, and won't take you to Rangeley.

Thanks Roland ...that's exactly what I was looking for. Much appreciated. I hiked through the area on my thru in 2003 but never got acqainted with the areas surrounding the trail.

You're welcome, 'Slogger.
The bus pulls into Gorham at 9:30 PM. There are many lodging options available, if you decide to spend the night before heading to ME.
It's a 2 hour ride from Gorham to Rangeley.

Again ...thanks Roland.
I think this is starting to sound like a plan. My wife will be thrilled. She missed this section on her thru in 2001 and has been after me ever since to hike it with her to finish off the AT, especially after I thru'd in 2003.

Hi! Aqua and myself will be Caretakers At The Cabin in Maine with Honey from May-Oct-if there is anything we can do for you let us know-Gorham's only about 50 miles from us. Be sure to stop and say hi on your way to Rangely if nothing else.

May just take you up on that. Are you the Rambunny from 2001 ? If so, you might have met or heard of my wife (BadAss Turtle). She got injured and missed some miles that we are trying to pick up now to finish off her hike.
Anyway ...you're talking about the Cabin close to Andover ...correct ?? When got to Andover on my thru in 2003 I hiked out at Grafton Notch and got a ride directly into Andover and ended up staying at Pine Ellis, which was a really nice experience. But with Pine Ellis up for sale/sold now I really think that the Cabin might be a better option for us. We'll probably need re-supply by then. Do you do any shuttles into town for food ?? Give me some more information about your exact location and how to get/stay in touch (e-mail/phone) and we'll add it to our plan.

why not rent a car? thats what we often do, and its a lot easier and you have more freedom.

Thanks man ...we always look at that option but in this case the problem would be the drop off. We'd be renting in Mass and dropping off in NH. No way I'm gonna rent a car and park it for 10 - 11 days. Hate spending all that time on a bus but it is most likely the cleanest option given the area we're going to hike.
