It was cold on the trail in Georgia this past weekend. Thru hikers were everywhere with visions of Maine pulling them onward. Where did this snow come from in late March?

A pic from the trail:

It was cold on the trail in Georgia this past weekend. Yeah, I thru-hiked Helen this weekend. It was tough getting through the windchimes near the parking lot, then I got stuck in the fudge shop. We traversed across the stage area battling the Jimmy Buffet sing-along and barely made it across the street to the glassblower's shop. From there it was all downhill to the Troll cafe beside the river. Revived by an emergency Reuben platter with a Shiner bock we managed to complete the hike.

You should expect cold snaps until the blackberries bloom.

oh it was equally cold and snowy in Erwin as well.
Did a 9 miler out of Miss Janets with a few other hikers..Superman, Pacey, and Justina...at least 8 inches of snow around Indian grave gap, south we hiked, it was a beautiful 9 miles.

Slippery, but awesome.

Grilled burgers and distributed PBRs on Trey Mtn on Sat. Must have been in the 0's with the 15-45 MPH wind. Good times nonetheless. Dog froze but we had a blast.Good luck to NOBOs. Some good folks out there this year.

In the higher elevations of the Smokies. I was lucky on my section hike of Georgia this year (March 7-17). Daytime temps got as high as 78 (on top of Blood Mountain). Coldest night was on Springer (low 30's). Hiking the section from Unicoi Gap to Dick's Creek Gap, the temps were in the 50's with a 20-30 mph. wind. Cold, but it made me hike harder, eventually doing the whole section in a day (I didn't plan it that way, I just felt good).

This week looks pretty good for NOBO's from Georgia through Tenn. (temp. wise).

This is good to hear. I'm hoping for a few nice days to start out with.

Must have been 10 degrees on Rocky Bald last Fri. night. My home made sleeping system barely kept me alive. I shivered all night, but still managed to get a little sleep. Fixed Ham and eggs for the thru-hikers on Sat and Sun. Thanks for the help.

What a bunch of weenies! I was out there too but rather than carrying their 40 or 50 pound backpack, I used a 10 pound pack leaving town (5 days food). It wasn't that bad, just a little snow and ice.

Snowing here in New Hampshire all f-en day. Blew away the carport type tarps we put up last week. Slippin and sliding in the snow. When I hit the smokies on my hike - A glorious ice storm. It was the perfect time for me to pass all the weenies. I heard some vague news about tornados in Tenn. Anyone know how close thet came to the AT?

They didn't come anywhere near the AT. They hit Middle Tenn., most damage in Sumner county where I live. Lots of homes and business' wiped out. 12 people dead. We're becoming the new tornado alley.

OOps didn't notice the date on your post. The middle TN tornadoes hit on the 7th. The tornados you're talking about hit western TN I believe.
