I mapped this on a Delorme CPU program and came up with 32 miles. I've been told it's 45. Which is correct??? THANKS for the help.

It's 40.7 miles.

I wonder why the Delorme Program is so far off??? A discrepancy of 8 miles is pretty severe. That bothers me a bit. Quite a bit. Curious to know if anyone else has had this problem with their software.

It's no biggy. You are expecting the software to manage elevation changes and distances in a rural area. These map programs have troubles, even in the big city. For instance, Mapquest has sent folks trying to find my home in Smyrna to a apartment community in Dunwoody for at least 8 years.

My guess is that the 32 miles are either highway miles or crow-flight miles.

Since Mapquest was mentioned, I had an interesting experience trying to find the trailhead to get to McAfee Knob last summer. I ended up on a dead end street around Roanoke at an asphalt plant. I stopped at a Waffle House, a motel, and a couple of convenience stores before I found any locals who even knew what the AT was. Finally, a used car salesman who hunted deer in the area overheard me asking a convenience store clerk and he told me the way to go. Mapquest was only off by about 5 miles. An adventure within an adventure. BONUS!

Mapquest sucks. They send you around your ass to get to your elbow.

wrt to the 8 mile error - is it possible Delorme is showing the old AT route across what is now the Pine Mtn blue blaze - seems to me that blue blaze cuts out about 8 miles of the AT

When did this portion of the Trail change? The Delorme program is from 2004... that's not to say the maps aren't from another era. I'm starting to wonder...
