The scene: Mt. Marcy, at 5,344', the highest point in New York. Another case of unprepared hikers needing rescue because of their irresponsibility. Apparently, New York doesn't charge guys like this for the cost of the rescue.

These geniuses didn't get caught in a storm, they started up in the snow with sneakers! And between 3 of them cannot read a map? Wow not the brightest bulbs on the tree!

What happened was they got up there and it got dark and I bet $ for donuts they didn't have a light (another mistake) and couldn't follow their tracks down.

How does one get "driven down" to Marcy Dam"? You could be driven out from Marcy Dam to the Loj road.

I try to be open minded and charitable, but then I revert back to "you can't fix stupid". By the time they called, it had been dark for nearly an hour - nobody thought to turn around when the sun was still up and the snow was only 2" deep?

My guess is they were escorted down to the dam, then driven out.

We went up Marcy one October, and like other hikes in the northeast it can get mean fast. A light snow and 25 degrees turned into below 0 and 8 inches in a hurry before we were off the mountain. That storm eventually brought 15 inches in 24 hours. We were just fine but someone without experience doesn’t have the experience to know what they are getting into.

It’s easy to paint others as idiots, but the problem with current pop culture is people truly don’t understand the dangers of the real world. I think many are simply so sheltered from real consequences that they honestly have zero clue that “life or death” is a real thing.

Then they should stay home playing video games not putting others at risk.

I'm sure the folks that went to "recue " these people had a nice Thanksgiving meal with family that they had to leave.

I've seen people trekking up Colorado 14ers in sneakers and sweat pants for 30 years.

If you can't check the weather report the morning of a day hike and discern that sneakers and snow don't mix, than it is very reasonable for others to wonder if your performance on an IQ test would score you between an idiot and a moron (actual test result terms).

Is that the PCT or that ridge trail?
