Is there a water source close to the Richardson-Zlogar Cabin?

There is no improved water site at that shelter. Unfortunately, the current drought conditions (Level 1 mild to Level 2 significant) are not all that conducive to flowing water at high elevations or on top of ridges and hills. That said, a few significant rain events can improve the water circumstances however, preparedness should be the operative word. Presumably the trail map will show some of the more sturdy surface water run off streams, small ponds/marshes, rivers and lakes. Best advice would be to ask those approaching from the opposite direction of water availability and be prepared to stop at a mapped water source to fill up prior to reaching the shelter site.

A good time to remind people that water purification systems and/or chemicals are beneficial when drought conditions slow the breakdown of animal and human waste. This elevates fecal content of surface water as it travels over ground into catchments, run-off streams, and inlets to larger bodies of water.
