Iso one with some or all of the following.
*a material that does Not wet out.
*pit zips or some other controlled pit ventilation preferably longer zips that go down some of both the arm and the torso.
*Pockets that work well with backpacks a plus, but no pockets acceptable
*ample Hood beak and good neck closures for minimal aqua ingress.
*a back vent flap is exceptable
*(not sure what it's called) Double zippered, so can be zipped open from the bottom so can be worn like a cape.

So basically like many BP jackets, but made of/w pvc, pu, or something like some solid waterproof nylon military surplus rain gear. Polyurethane coating extremely least preferred of the three

Of course somewhat lighter is better.
But am willing to take several weight penalties. But don't want a super thick heavy one.

Since you are open to some, but not all of those qualities you may want to check out the Torrentshell. It lacks the double zipper and I'm not sure how you will feel about the modern materials. I can vouch that it is a darn fine rain coat for backpacking in real rain though. See my Trailspace review for lots of details. I picked up one for Mrs Stranger for Xmas on sale recently so don't pay full price if they aren't on sale right now.

Checks some of your boxes. Been very happy (and dry) with their silpoly tarp. Both my tarp and quilt from them are well made. This is on my short list if I decide not to go with my poncho.

I use The Packa, I like the pit zips; however, it may not check the boxes for you.

I use The Packa…

Does it come in minty green Celeste color to match your user name?

I have a Sitka gear gore-tex less than 1lb jacket with pit zips that start at the hand warmer pockets and unzips all the way to my elbow. FWIW wearing any rain jacket while exerting yourself in all but cold temps will produce some overheating or moisture problems.

I love the Packa. The front zipper of the Packa has a flap with velcro closures to cover the zipper.
