Don’t believe everything you read on social media, it is often wrong.

You can’t change your greeting if you have no signal. The voicemail system resides with your provider. There are other reasons a rescue team has advised for not doing this, as discussed in the article below.

A couple good points in that article besides the obvious is that texting takes much less battery and is much more likely to get through seeing that most 911 call centers use text also. They also point out the best way to save battery is "closing all apps, turning off Bluetooth and WiFi, and do not use the GPS/map features on the phone. The compass feature is also a battery-drainer".

Another reason to always carry a real compass and paper maps.
