Gorham NH will have two dueling Chinese Buffets starting August 3rd. The existing place seems to have a pretty steady stream of thru hikers. It is the last of many Chinese buffets along the trail for northbound folks.

The new place is located in a former Burger King across the street from McDonalds and just down the road from the original buffet.

When I was a male between 14-21 on limited funds, no words sounded better than AYCE Buffet. Now I think about what it would take to make enough profit for a low cost buffet to stay in business, and I pass.

At first I thought you pass because you feel bad about their profits but it didn't take long to realize you pass because "who knows what they're serving!"

Good point but I still would not pass on a backpacking trip.

Seeing as how the majority of these All you can Eat buffets seem to be operated by (and serving much food of) Chinese descent, that may be part of the reason that they can do what they do.

Chinese restaurants in general have been known to serve meals that are in the low-cost category, and they tend to be run by families (which may mean lower costs for labor as well). Seems that much of that may carry over into their buffets as well (even though some do serve items that would otherwise be more costly but charge accordingly and figure that not everyone will eat those things in large quantity).

if you look at any AYCE buffet you will see that there are lots of "inexpensive" low quality foods to fill you up. I never could eat enough at those things to get my moneys worth. Many buffets from what I remember charge extra for most beverages. That's a huge mark up.

As David Letterman said about Golden Corral, "We only charge you $6.95 for steak, you promise to not ask any questions."
