Zip,
I am section hiking starting from the approach trail on 4/13 going to neels ga. I am hoping to knock out the approach trail on 4/13 and get to springer that night. The down side is I am getting a late start as I am driving from Fl on 4/13 so I will have limited daylight. Not sure yet if I am wanting to night hike.
But Maybe I will see you at Springer. I'll have the bright yellow Marmot pack. Can't miss it!

We'll be at Amicalola Falls SP on the 14th but not starting the hike until the 15th. I'm sure we'll cross trail somewhere. :)

I am so jealous. I envy all you april departures. I can not start my NOBO hike until May 13th. Anyway, may your days be long, your hearts be merry, and may the bears and shelter mice leave you in peace!

I am driving up to NOC from Tallahassee on the 16th and getting shuttled back to Springer that same day.
Can one drive to the top of springer? I sure would like to get dropped of at the top rather than do the approach trail as I only have 2 weeks to hike back to the Noc.

The parking lot is 0.9 miles North of Springer. Cross the FS road to hike to Springer.

Cannonball, you can get dropped off and the Springer parking lot. Good luck!

Every year at least once I am asked by someone in the USFS 42 parking lot if I know "which way" it is to Springer. For a lot of casual hikers this may be their only time on the trail -- I think this would be a good spot for a trail sign indicating which way Springer is.

Three of us are starting on the 16th at Springer. Plan on doing the Ga section at a leisurely pace. Hope to see you on the trail at some point:banana :banana :banana

Thanks all. I was hoping to get "right to it" but was concerned about daylight if I had to do the approach trail. I am assuming that the parking lot on top of Springer won't be difficult to find if one asks for directions once they arrive at Am. falls?
RCL, no doubt I will see you on the trail. I am looking forward to discussing the meritts of Pin. Co. vs. Hiils. Co with you.

Since there is a parking lot at the top of Springer is it permisable to park the long term, say 2 weeks. If so, how safe is your auto.
I'm thinking of just leaving my auto ther and hiking to the NC line and hiking back to Springer.
This is more appealing than spending an additional 5 hours on the road and paying some one 155 smackers for a shuttle.

Hi FLC, Maybe we will cross paths. I am leaving out the 14th so I will be a couple days ahead of you but if I take a zero day we could meet up. :)

Hi Roamin, I would not leave my car on Springer. The parking lot is out in the middle of the woods with only a forest service road coming by. You could park at Amicalola State Park, the car is safe there, and get a shuttle to Springer. Me, I wouldn't want to backtrack, I would rather see new country.

Springer is not a place you would want to leave your car for long.

Zip,
I actually am leaving my vehicle at the Byron Reece memorial parking lot and catching a shuttle down to amicalola. From the approach trail I am hiking up to neels gap. I still am in between about ending my hike at that point. My other option is to continue to the N.C. border and then catch a shuttle back to my car at Byron Reece.
I think the hike will get the best of me and I'll continue on to the border but we'll see.

Hey, Just wanted to tell everyone that I made my section hike from Springer To NOC. I left on the 14th as planned and finished on the 22nd. Everyone should try out the Cloud 9 Hostel which is 1.5 miles west of Dicks Creek Gap, going toward Hiawassee. It is located at the Upper Tower Trout Farm. Thanks to everyone for all the info and advice thru the past months.
