So..... I hiked 700 miles of the AT in 2003, and was completely immersed in the community. After my hike, I dropped out of the AT life for a couple of years, and lost sight of how amazing this world really is!
Yesterday I spent the day doing trail magic at Rock Gap in North Carolina, and was lucky to meet and spend some time with Crutch. He was there doing a month of shuttling and magic. A month?!?! When I started thinking about the time and financial commitment that he was making, I was stunned. But the coolest thing that he is doing......he is helping all those new northbounders. And he is helping them with more than food and a ride. I sat and watched him 'hold court' with about 15 nobos, regaling them with stories and helpful hints and I was reminded once again that this is what this community is really all about.
So many of the trail regulars that we know could just "pull up the ladder" and let the new hikers find their own way, but they don't . They throw themselves out there and do their best to help others not to make the same mistakes they did. I think that is just classy as hell! :)
I am glad to see that some things never change!
Just for the record, I met BigX, Sage, Donkey Love, Hobo Woman, and about fifteen others nobos. They all looked good and were headed North.
Oh.......and if anyone sees Pirate out there, will you tell him that Mud Butt said hello? :) :) Anna aka Mud Butt

Mud Butt, you've got to describe how you came to acquire your lovely trail name, although I can imagine the circumstances. Here's the thread you can append to: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56

Anna, trust me, the NOBOs don't need any "help."

You hiked with Bumpkin! Never got the pleasure of meeting either one, but you two were definitely inspirational. Slow but sure and determined... I'll be back too!

You were one of the Wild Women! (That's a group, not a personal comment) We met really early on, in Georgia, I think.
I remember you also broke your foot, in two places, after about a hundred miles, and came back a month or so later to hike some more. I think that's in the dictionary under "inspirational".
