Mid April in the Olympic Mountains of Washington is a very special time of the year. The flowers come out and rival the display on the AT in North Carolina and Tennessee. I went out this weekend for a brief romp to celebrate the end of another winter and the start of easy hiking. You can read all about my flower-and-sun festival at

It has been a couple of years since I have been to the top of Mt. Elenore, but I do remember the trip up the "chute." It is billed as the "winter route" to the top. About half way up, my foot broke through the crust. I sank hip deep in the snow. I could hear water running below and realized that if I fell through no one would find me until the next summer. I turned back.

Last Monday, I was only a few miles north. I hiked the Lena Lake Trail. Then later in the week, I hiked the Lower Quilcene River Trail -- also in the Olympics. Perhaps I will see you in the Olymics in the next weeks while we wait for the snow in the Cascades to melt.

I did see one flower in the Olympics last week. It was one lone trilium.
