When will people learn to stop hunting a species BEFORE it gets to this point? Don't they realize rodent or not every animal is a necessary part of the food chain and by hunting it into near extinction can have a huge affect on everything else?

According to the article the problem isn't with hunting, they claim it's lack of habitat.

I find that claim suprising because I've lived in urban areas all my life and see plenty of rabbits. They are quite adaptable and there is still an awful lot of wilderness in Maine.

It has got to be something other than habitat. Go 10 miles outside any city in Texas (where it is still somewhat developed) and cottontails flourish.
