Is there a campsite near Compton Springs? I'd hate to make camp only to find there is an existing site nearby. Thanks

I've not heard of Compton Springs. Where is that? I know of Compton Gap, where the AT first intersects with the Skyline Drive SOBO. I didn't happen to notice campsites in that area, but there may be. Finding existing campsites in SNP along the AT, except at the huts can be a bit tricky b/c it follows a ridgeline with drop offs. And also there are the park regs. I've seen more established campsites off trail in the hollows.

Blissful,
Compton Springs are on the south side of Compton mountaiin which is south of Compton Gap. As a diabetic I need lots of water and like to camp near (not too near) water sources.

I think the trail is pretty steep near the spring, as I recall. If I were to look for a flat spot, I would consider the saddle that is northwest of the AT halfway between the spring and Compton Peak. There are flat spots at Jenkins Gap, but not campsites because its too close to Skyline Drive.

There is a nice view from Compton Peak.

take compton gap trail to your right

Neo, could you be referring to the "Chester Gap Trail" rather than the Compton Gap Trail? I think the Chester Gap Trail leaves the AT to the right, about a mile north of Compton Gap The Chester Gap Trail becomes the Chester Gap Road, once it leaves the park, on which the Terrapin Station Hostel is located.

There is fairly relaible spring ( I think...we'll have to let Skyline weigh in) just off the AT north of the Compton Gap parking area. The trail is wide and flat there - it's the 1st intersection after the parking area there's a concerete post and it's labeled "Spring" - it's a bit of hike down a gentle hill - not sure on the distance but it's not super far. There is also a maintaince hut down there too - if you get to the hut you have gone too far. No idea what the rules are about camping near the hut.

Thanks all,
I guess I should have included that I will be South Bound through Shenandoah NP. I was hopping to get past Compton Gap. We'll be doing only about 8 miles a day, so Compton springs seems like a good spot.
