I am looking for the lightest and cheapest tarptent for a single person on the market. Preferably one that will set up with trekking poles. Suggestions?

Do you want a floor and noseeum mesh ?? ...or just a tarp ??

I currently use the Lunar Solo-e from Six Moon Designs when I backpack by myself (and the Tarptent Squall when the wife and I hike together). The Lunar Solo-3 uses one hiking pole and weighs 23 oz. It has a floor and noseeum mesh. It's a nice set up for a solo hiker.

If that's the case I agree with Sparky. I have the GoLite Cave II and used it for a while on my thru in 2003. Set up takes a little getting used to but it is a worthy shelter. Also check out the Lair II by GoLite. I'm not a huge GoLite per se but I have experience with those 2 shelters.

I do NOT want a floor or mesh. just a tarp.

walmart sells a cheapie polyurethene tarp for about $10.

campmor sells a silnylon one for a bit more ($60? i don't remember).

mccat and some others make them more expensive/higher quality for still more.

for years i've been using an army surplus poncho and bungee cords: simple, super-lightweight, adjustable to changes in weather (wind changes, et al), fast set-up/takedown, and best of all, cheap.

Checkout Brawnys Tacoma Tarp tent at Dancing Light gear.

Dancing Light gear is top notch and trail proven. It's available for $60 w/o netting or floor. I have the netted version with edge mesh and am very pleased. Just make sure you order the longer model if you are near or over 6'. At 6' 3" I wish I had!

If you're looking to keep the price and weight down, you might look at the coated nylon tarps (http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/campmor/iphrase.jsp?command=text&text=Coated+Nylon+Tarp+&image.x=0&image.y=8)

Gramma,
If you want just a tarp, you might experiment with a poncho or cape. There are many setups and you can be as snug as you want with a little practice. The most weatherproof is the 1/2 pyramid, next is the A-frame or the leanto. An afternoon experimenting in the back yard whould tell you whether this is an option for you.

The six moon designs Gatewood cape would also be worthy of a look.

Oware.com has tarps that do not have seams in the middle. I like the golite tarp because it has the "beaks" that help block out wind. I actually added a beak to my oware tarp, even though there tarp is set up at one end so that a beak is not needed. 8x10 is a very spacious size that will alos fit over a hammock. 4x6 is not quite big enough for me, but the oware is about 6x8, I think. It fits into the palm of my hand when packed.

I'm also a fan of Brawny's Tacoma Tarp. Simple design, light weight, and easy to set up once you get the hang of it. I have the 10' version with mesh, and have had no problems. I use a piece of tyvek for a ground cloth. I've used it in some pretty wet weather and had no problems staying dry.

Try www.rayjardine.com (http://www.rayjardine.com) Lots of colors to choose from. They say black is warmer as it has less radiant heat loss.
