I think I've decided to get Frogg Toggs for my rain/wind protection on my thru-hike next year. Which model do people use? Original, Pro-Action, Pro-Sport, or Elite?

Also, where do you all recommend purchasing them for cheap? What price range should I be looking for? I saw some for $200.00 down to $48.00. I don't understand the difference. Thanks!!!

What is the difference between these models. I used the original FTs for a thru-hike in '03. At the time the design was sloppy. I've converted to Durafab - covered, snap-closed zippers, better hood, more breathable, less likely to pick up leaves and twigs, under $10 for top and pants. No more durable, however. Also check out BPL for Drop SToppers, $17 to $20 per set. I haven't used them but you can find user comments at http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/index.html

Never pay more than $80 for FTs. They are way overpriced even at that. Check at bubbahunterfisherman sports stores. Also look for Durafab, DropStoppers and Micropore at such empriums.

I am currently researching this also...thinking about switching out of my poncho/tarp rain gear to the Frogg Toggs.

I noticed that the ProSport was designed for mostly motorcycle riding or anything in a seated postion.
The ProAdvantage was designed for fisherman and motorcycling as well.

I am down to the Pro Action or Sports Suit, almost the same but the Sports Suite is a straight cut leg...not so sure how well that will work over pants and boots where the Pro Action has the zipper on the pants.
Just a few things to think about.
I wish I could go to a store and see them in person...here is a link that has almost all the options for Frogg Toggs now available. Not sure if they are the best prices though. Seem very fair to me.

I hiked with a gal this year for sixty miles or so and she had frogg toggs. she wore the jacket backwards during the day so her back could breathe and it doubled as a windbreaker and extra 'heat-holder'.

I went on ebay and found that they were pretty cheap...then I ended up at one of those "Gander Mountain" stores and they had them on sale for $48.00 a set! Wow!

They had black and turquoise color. I bought a pair, and have definately switched to them from my Marmot Precip jacket/bottoms. Frogg Toggs are much lighter, multi-use, not as hot/sweaty and the only setback I found was that they 'fray' a little AND they are bulkier....I have not tried to use them in a compression sack or anything.

Two thumbs up from this hiker!

I think Acadamy Sports still carries them. That is where I bought mine at a few yrs ago. I paid 29.00 for the complete set. I have worn the pants once and always take the jacket

I got mine from Academy, but I also got a killer discount on them.
I've had them 3 years now and I love them.

I like the pro action. Some people don't carry the pants but i do. I think froggies are the best!

I have the Pro Action suit. Don't spend extra on the other ones because Pro Action is really all you need.

--MicheleIf you want lightweight without paying big bucks, consider DriDucks from gossamer gear

http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/gossamergear/driducks_rainsuit.html

$25 a set, 10 ounces. THey are just as fragile as frogg togs, though. Bushwhacking will rip them up.

I use a Packa when hikng and Driducks around camp

Is this your raingear? http://www.probuy.net/products/301.html
Any idea on weight? I have Frogg Toggs and do not like them. They don't repel water well for long, and after that point serve little purpose other than stopping some wind.

Just picked up a set yesterday. Actually, the set on sale is the Pro Angler one, with the stupid bib-style rainpants. For the XXL set I bought, it's normally $69.95, so 30 bones off is a pretty smoking deal. I will not use the pants; didn't even try them on. $39.95, IMO, is well worth it for the jacket alone.

I did the same thing. I'm thinking of making gaiters and stuff sacks out of the pants. :D
