Newb,

Thank you for alerting us, “Bears kil and Eat monkey! ... It could just as easily have been a hiker!!!”

I read the link you provided. I caution hikers, who run away from bears, to avoid running “... into an electric fence, where (they could be) stunned.”

The fence seems to have been a big help for the bears.

Mmmm. yummmy monkeys. You know a hiker would eat them after a month on the trail. so...is the monkey safer from the bear or the hiker?

It could just as easily have been a hiker!!!

What an outrageous statement, sir. The comparison between a monkey and a thru-hiker is an inexcusable insult to monkeys everywhere!

He's right - it could very easily have been a hiker chasing that poor monkey into an electric fence and mucking him down like a foil pack of tuna.

Do you think monkeys make good Spam?

It's a shame it wasn't a baboon...I had a pithy comment regarding hikers and baboons and "red-ass". Alas, Barbary macaques have no red ass (or tail either).

Wouldn't you like to know the bear's internal dialogue during this incident and the days that led up to it. Can't you just see the monkey taunting the bears and the bears saying to themselves, "One of these days..." :-?

Hmmm, does this mean comparison to a section or day hiker is not an insult to the monkeys:confused: . Or just an excusable insult:p

Not a whole abundance of "sloth bears" on the AT as far as I know...

Plus you know its all of 4 feet tall, I've got in fights with french midgets before... beating up a short furry creature isnt that big of a challenge

AP News Cat proves his mettle by chasing black bear up tree

Saturday June 10, 2006
WEST MILFORD, N.J. (AP) A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree twice.
Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.
``We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear,'' owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions.
Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.
After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.
Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods.
``He doesn't want anybody in his yard,'' Dickey said.
Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

Here's a link to the Colbert Report and his take on the story. He seems to think that this monkey has only whetted the bears taste for primate flesh.

The lead-in is a sales pitch for mac & cheese. I hope this doesn't offend any of the members here....seems to be a point of contention. :)
