I have a friend whose daughter got the plague about 8 years ago. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital. They're not sure where she caught it. BTW, she hadn't been in a campground or anywhere near an AT shelter.
Plague has been endemic for years among rodents in the Four-Corners area not far from where the article mentions so it is not such a big surprise. That is over half a country away from the AT, so I doubt it has much AT significance.
