After a sorry attempt on the AT back in '04 with too much weight, and an injury, I am soon ready to do this again come June 5th! I once was a 65 pounder, and now, with 10 days of food and 3 liters of water, my entire gear list weighs no more than 35 pounds ... without all the fuss-and-muss of the ultra-pricey, ultra lite-gear! :D That's with a base-weight of 10 pounds *hammock, pack, sleeping bag*

I'm not much of a gear freak, but I'm soo happy that I was able to get this down to a more enjoyable weight and still be quite prepared for most things along the trail. Thanks fore letting me vent my joy in your general direction. Your regularly scheduled fun may now resume. :sun

WooHoo! is RIGHT! Great job! You've made things a lot easier on yourself! The packweight is super but the real thing that shines here is that you've taken the responsibility of finding out what works better for you.

You have shown ATTITUDE and INITIATIVE, two important qualities of a successful thru-hiker.

Good Luck--Hope you have a FANTASTIC hike!

Now, get out there and ENJOY IT!

Tudor:

You'll probably lighten your load even more after a few weeks on the trail...
if you havent used in 3 days...you probably dont need it (basic emergency First Aid kit doesnt fall into this category)!

I've lightened my load from an original 45+ lbs in 2002 to 31 lbs this year...(YES! that includes 7 days of food & water!)

...if i spent a few hundred more on ULTRA-LITE gear...i could drop about 3 more pounds

Good LUCK with your hike! :D

Minimization is the key, I do belive! My 'First-Aid Kit' isn't really that. It's a bottle of Multi-Vitamins, 32 packets of Emer-Gen-C with Glucosamine & Chondroitin and a tube of Bacitracin Anti-Bacterial. ;) If you want to view the majority of my gear-list, visit http://spaces.msn.com/beyond-thought as this will also be a sort of trail journal kept by my family as I check in with them. Also some good pictures of Maine from my '04 attempt.

Thanks everyone for the enthusiasm and encouragement. It's great not having to answer silly questions of "Why are you doing something like this?", "Are you sure you can make it?", "What do your parents think?" ! lmao :sun

Good luck to you! It's gonna be one helluva trip. ;)

I'm starting to understand about the silly questions lol My personal favorite is "Are you really going to carry everything?" :D

Way to go Tudor!! and Happy trails to ya!!

My pack weight was up into the 50s when I first started backapcking back in 03. Now I rarely see it go up over 30. i'm happy about that b/c now I can enjoy myself a lot more while i'm out on the trail ~GB

Kyerger,

Where in SNP are you gonna start your flip-flop? It would be great to meet you along the trail! Thanks Skidsteer for listing that! There are a few items in my pack that aren't listed, such as food, journal, minor 1st aid (read dietary supplements) and a few camp luxuries. Even with those though, my pack weight doesn't go beyond 35 pounds. So sweet! Gonna enjoy this one so much more. Hope to meet some of you along the trail.
