just out of curiosity, anyone have any stories/pictures of people who started out the hike pretty fat and ended up pretty skinny (naturally)? i know bryson mentions the 350 lb guy who lost 50 lbs on his thru-hike, but i can't recall the guy's trail name.

As I inched my way north it occurred to me that the trail is the perfect weight loss business. One could guarantee weight loss on an all you can eat diet. Just one simple stipulation. All food consumed first has to be carried 15 miles, up and down hills in a 40 pound pack.

Hey Weary, that's good:D . In reality, it would probably be the best weight loss program ever developed.

I weighed about 220 when I climbed Springer. By Hot Springs I was well under 200 and by New York I weighed 155. I held 155 all the way to Katahdin but I carried Parkey in a holster and put it on everything I ate just to stop any more weignt loss, A year later I was back to 200 and weigh about 205 -210 today. Great weight loss program but I didn't maintain my low weight once I got home.

Weary - people actually already have those businesses. I don't know how successful they are, but they're out there.

Hey, Moxie: Just stick with the program. Eat all you want of anything you want. Just carry it first for 15 miles in a 40-pound pack up and down hills.

This summer, however, I urge a slight modification. We need you in the Maine Legislature. So just walk door to door, carrying campaign materials. Two visits to every house in your district should do the trick.
