</DIV></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The hole story
After last week's column about the introduction of landlocked salmon to New Jersey, we had several requests for more details about places the salmon have been stocked. This lake is located along the New York border in Sussex and Passaic counties, in an area that is a collection of forested hills with spectacular views and great hiking. A 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, and you'll get as much enjoyment out of the scenery as the fishing. The salmon can survive here because of the clear, cold water that flows in from Highland Lake.
What's biting
The salmon are the new drawing card, but this is a premier spot for largemouth bass. You'll also do well chasing pickerel and catfish, and yellow perch and sunfish are also abundant. Trout do well in this lake, and, because of the water temperatures and depth, you can often get nice-sized ones even in the summer months.
What they're biting on
The bass in this lake thrive on the herring that live there, so don't be afraid to fish live bait here. The salmon will feed readily on the same herring, but you can also use streamers and lures that imitate minnows. This is always a good place to experiment with a variety of lures, and young anglers can have a good day using nothing more than worms. Keep in mind that you can't keep the salmon until they reach 12 inches in length.
The bottom line
A great family destination. There's swimming during the summer months and picnic facilities, and you'll enjoy the hiking trails. There's good fishing along the shore, but you'll want to rent a boat and give some of the deeper parts of the lake a try. There's a $5 entrance fee on weekdays and $10 on weekends. You can get more information on the park at the State Department of Environmental Protection Web site: state.nj.us/dep/fgw/index.htm

For any hikers out there following the AT in Wayawayanda State Park in NJ: Just about 1/2 mile before (northbound) the Waywayanda Shelter you cross a dirt road. The AT makes a left and then a right shortly after on this road. So where the AT makes a left on the road, you make a right and follow it about 1.5 miles to the lake. There are boat rentals at the lake also.
