EGADS!!!!

"Fontana Village's new owners, who bought the resort from the Peppertree organization in March 2005, 'are determined to make the village a popular Smoky Mountain destination,' said spokeswoman Anto Birchfield."

"They are owners of Robbinsville-based Phillips and Jordan, Inc., one of the largest land-clearing operations in the world."

Wild-assed guess, they play golf and/or poker with Congressman Charley Taylor.

So, Sly.
Do you find this RE development of a rather lame facility a good thing or a bad thing?

No flame intended. Serious question. You're local, I'm not.

Yeah it's also super expensive this year. 2 beers and a burger for lunch cost us $20 a piece.Went back to see if the dinner buffet was around...nope $17 a plate was the cheapest. Rooms in the main inn are $100 OFF SEASON! The hiker rooms are quite nice at $40 though.

Hopefully this is not a move that gives ammo to the Road to Nowhere crowd, or a move in anticipation of the road actually being built. Other than that wrinkle, the place was tired out and needed a shot in the arm.

It has always needed a shot in the arm. I've been going to Fontana Village for over 45 years. Rarely has it been very busy or a big attraction. Alcohol sales are likely to help move it into some profitability, but that could result in tearing down the cabins and building the McMansions that Rainbow Creek Campgrounds hoped to become.

cool place. It was pretty much a ghost town by the time we got there in November. Not sure when the new owners took over, but you could buy beer there when we stayed.

Probably a good thing...

I live a few hours away and had never been to FV until my thru. I recall writing in my journal something to the effect that "the average age of the guests here is deceased" and "this is one place I won't return to".

In 18 years I haven't returned.

Now I might.

yes it could use some improvement but that area and cosby are two ways to access the Smokes without dealing with pigeon forge and gatlinburg..in fact fontana has lots to offer other than hiking, last year i paddled camped from bryson city,a day paddle to hazel creek is worthwile, and tsali has mountain bike trails galore....a trip im brewing in my mind is to paddle to hazel creek then do a loop hike back to paddle back to fontana..hmmmm

Lake Fontana is really breathtaking, the Smokys are rising up to the North and East, the Nantahala River is very close by, Joyce Kilmer/ Sickrock Wilderness is not too far off, Bryson City has some larger town perks and Fontana Village has always seemed dead when I have passed through. Does not make sense to me. Seems like the perfect place to draw visitors away from overrun Cherokee and Gatlinburg. On the other hand, who wants more of that crap.

when traveling people ask where from and i tell them and they say 'oh i bet you go to gatlinburg all the time'.!!!!!!!!! what a tumor that place is, but i suppose a thru-hiker gets some r&r there so to them a different slant.

They might price themselves out of the market. I also, wonder what the thru-hiker setup (if any) and prices will be?

To amend my previous post. When I say "setup" I mean hostel type quarters or will it just be rooms. Hopefully they want price themselves out of the hiker/backpacker market. I also wonder about the outfitter that will be there and to what extent they will be able to "outfit".

Hopefully this does not have an negative effect on Jeff and Nancy's Hike Inn. Fine people and super hiker friendly! Hey Sly, who is Charly Taylor?

I would also like to know the relationship Sly mentioned, mainly because I've heard that name before along with mention of the casino in Cherokee.

Hey Sly, who is Charly Taylor?

Rep Taylor says...

"have the distinct honor of serving as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and Environment which funds over twenty-six billion dollars of federal government activities, including many important to Western North Carolina such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Carl Sandburg Home and the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. I also serve on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Science, State, Justice, and Commerce".

Knowing Sly's biases, it probably safe to assume that Rep Taylor is a Republican.

I have been considering that, also. I just worry that my canoe mignt not be there waiting on me when I finish the hiking part of the trip.

Rep. Charles Taylor is the Adolf Hitler of Western North Carolina.

Mr Taylor sees a forested mountainside and views it as wasted revenue.
Mr Taylor's "Final Solution" for the trees and wild places in WNC includes the genocide of all living plant and animal species. If Cade's Cove were within his grasp I am sure that he would have an upscale subdivision in mind complete with Walmart, Target and all the trimmings.

Here is one of the things that the new owners have added... an ATM machine. I am posting this because every other hiker that came through here this season expressed how they thought we should have one.
So for those of you who wanted one of these magical boxes that produce cash on demand, here you go. They are located at the lodge (where registration is now,) and at the general store.

Well.... besides pushing for a ridiculously expensive road through the Smokies, his LCV Scorecard sucks, as does most other Republicans.

Wanna give me a reason I should vote for him?
