Yesterday, June 6, I spent most of the day with Bob Peoples and a group finishing the Mountaineer Falls Shelter near where Bob lives. I did this for an article in honor of Bob and his work with the Hard Core Crew. You can find the information here, along with some photos:

http://www.traildays.info/hardcore.html

I'm also looking for photos of past Hard Core events, and the information on this is on the link above.

It was a privilege to spend time with Bob and his group even though he worked my butt off.

There are some pictures here on whiteblaze I took back in 2004, and maybe even some 2005 photos. I didn't make it this year for obvious reasons.

Bob ALWAYS works your butt off.

I think I have some pictures of a 2001 or 2 day hauling gravel!

From the article:

These pages are dedicated to Bob Peters and all the people who have worked with him on the trail.

Local,

Thought you might want to fix this typo.:)

Fixed. Thanks, Skidsteer. I rarly maik misteaks. ;)

If any other additions or modifications to the article are needed it can be changed easily. I'll probably revise it and add more information during the next few weeks.

Local, not to throw water on your article, but the idea for Hardcore was a joint effort between Bob and Forest Phil. Bob usually gets all the credit since everyone knows who he is but Bob will be the first to tell you that Forest Phil had a significant role in starting the project.

I'll take responsibility for this omission since the interview was only with Bob and dealt only with his involvement with Hard Core. He mentioned a lot of names which are used in the article, but perhaps I missed getting Forest Phil's. I would appreciate someone who knows the situation to write a paragraph or short article on Forest Phil (unless he lives close enough for me to interview him). Or if someone could send me contact information I'll call him or e-mail him. My e-mail is grsmith03 @ yahoo.com (remove the spaces).

Corrected. The following has been added to

http://www.traildays.info/peoples.html

"Hard Core started when a thru-hiker named Forest Phil hiked into Kincora. He and Bob became friends and the next year Phil came back to work with Bob and the Tennessee Eastman crew on trail maintenance. Through a series of conversations Phil and Bob came up with the idea of Hard Core. It was originally to be named "Phil's Folly," perhaps reflecting the uncertainty of what the two were trying to create. But Hard Core took off, and each year Forest Phil returns to help with the organization he helped to create and to work with the crew."

Starlyte, do I have your permission to use the photo of Forest Phil you have provided a link to?

If there are any other changes or suggestions for this article or anything else on www.traildays.info (http://www.traildays.info) please let me know. The beauty of this non-print media is that things can be changed easily.

Local, your story is pretty close. Phil is registered here on WB so you can email or PM him. He lives in Fredricksburg, Maryland so a face to face probably wouldn't be too easy.

Nah. There should be a shelter every ten miles. This keeps the crowds concentrated and those of us who never use shelters will have more of a wilderness experience.
