I had posted this in another thread but it didn't seem to get much responce so Ill try again :) Sorry to be a bug just trying to get as much info as soon as possible so I can keep on figuring things out.

Since I am planning my thru hike tenetativly on Feb 1 2007 I currently have a Sierra Designs Hyperlight 3 AST (http://www.rei.com/product/47857314.htm) which i know is overkill and way too heavy for me to carry i was looking into the HH Hyperlight Backpacker Asym (http://www.hennessyhammock.com/new-products.htm). I was wondering with the witer weather what would best suit me. I currnetly have the North Face Cat's Meow 3D long 15 degree sleeping bag weighing 57 ozs and a Pro lite 4 Thermorest Long (http://www.thermarest.com/product_detail.aspx?pID=41&cID=1). Now I know this isn't the best gear for the hammock. any suggestions.

I have no suggestions.

Here is what worked for me for down to 10 deg. F:

Hammock: HH Explorer Deluxe (the Hog sized one)
Pads: Exped Downmat-9 full length, generic blue CCF pad on top, strapped together
Bag: 0-deg FF Ibis used as a quilt but well tucked in
Etc: hot water nalgene between my legs, wearing all the clothes I had with me (4 layers) including "rain" gear and a down balaclava, pack (Gearskin) to insulate one shoulder, piece of CCF doubled over for the other shoulder (aka a sit pad)

I cannot say enough good things about the JRB Nest. The Nest and my Mountain Hardware Phantom 45 kept me comfortable into the mid 30s. And that was my first weekend using a hammock so I had no clue what I was doing!

I have since added a MacCat Tarp to my rig which seems to hold in more heat than the stock tarp.

Two weeks ago the Nest kept me warm down to the mid 50s with my tarp pitched high and without using my sleeping bag over me!

I have an underquilt similar to the JRB Old Rag Mountain that can take me into the 20's w/o a pad and only wearing polypro longjohns. I use a pre-overstuffed nest for a top quilt. I haven't had the opportunity to try it much below 30 yet, so I don't know where I would need a pad and/or extra clothing. The only way is to experiment!
