View Full Version : dandelion coffeelike drink
has any one tried this before you bake the roots in a slow oven grind and perk i was jut wondering before i tried it out how good or nastyit is
I've tried it once. Tastes "Earthy".
Maybe I used too much!!!:(
Did'nt give it a 2nd chance.
This year I'm trying the seeds from the Kentucky Coffee Tree, roasted and ground. Found a place where there is a group of about 35 trees to collect some seed.
I read about people substituting chickory for coffee before, wonder if that would be similar?

I've had chicory coffee when I was stationed in France. Took me awhile to get used to it. I don't think Kentucky Coffee tree coffee is going to taste like chicory.
I heard also that catnip tea is good tasing. I think I'll try some of that also.
Leaves of the New Jersy tea plant make a really good tea. For sure search out what that one looks like and collect some of it's leaves for tea. It is a native american shrub, growing to 3 feet in hieght, has tiny white flowers growing in umbels (like the Queen Anne's Lace) Attracts humming birds, they eat the tiny insects attracted to the tiny flowers:) Used extensivley during the civil war when there was a shortage of tea and coffee.

A mix of dandelion & chickory was used as a coffee substitute at various times in US history - the key word being substitute rather than replacement.
Both Luzianne & Community brand coffees from Louisiana have a nice chickory tang, Luzianne is maybe a tad stronger. Both are my favorites, though my wife prefers a 50/50 mix of Luzianne & a dark roast coffee.
So, rather obviously, that's mostly what I drink except at work where I can French Press my Luzianne straight.

Make sure you prepare the seeds correctly because the raw seeds are poisonous. I've never tried it.

Another caution: dandelion is a diuretic. I wouldn't recommend drinking dandelion tea daily under any circumstances, especially while out hiking for days at a time. If you do choose to try it, take extra steps to hydrate yourself the rest of the day.
