Approximately 1388 Hours of staring at a monitor at work.
Speaking of counting, by coincidence just yesterday I started off a countdown by putting up a post-it note with the 'number of days to go', up on my cubical wall.

As for preperation, last night (late-night shopping night) I went round to all the decent gear stores I knew to gather catalogues.

i figured as of this morning i have about 247 days left or something like that

:banana

this board should have a countdown timer so each planned thru hiker can see their departure date creeping up on them

Smacky70

247 is exactly what is says on my post it note for today :p
Looks like we'll most likely be meeting eachother on the trail.

i'm kindof at a standstill for the moment. i'm done most of my gear buying aside from clothing, and i want to get in better shape before buying clothing items. (side note: i think my brother is getting sick of my being giddy over my "baby" muscles i've started growing)

so.. i exercise. i read. i've read so much, i got a binder full of info. mostly i'm just waiting for the time for me to go. i wait and i dream. [:

This week I bugeted my money out to see when the rest of my debt would be payed off (December) I planed a 10 day vacation in September for a practice hike... I decided on my sleeping bags for the trip and plan to buy them with a bonus in August.. I picked out my trail watch and knife... I got rid of some more crap in my house ( less to store), and I worked out for the first time in a long time... little sore..
Oh yeah... and spent a crap load of time on Whiteblaze...

And that was just this week

i gave away my tv a month ago cause im writing a book called the tv diet.so i have alot more time and energy to give to the planning, working, saving part of my thru.not watching the tour this year is good and bad. its allways great to do somthing other than tv.the countdowns are funny. i do wish we could have individual clocks running.226 days till i wake up in ammacalola shelter, put all my crap in my bag, throw down some gravy mix and bagle(trail biscuts and gravy)and slog up springer and over .i like to stay a mile past springer on 42 .

I need to sell an office building, sell a house, move 1,500 miles, buy another house, buy another building, find someone to take over my business and plan food before 2/15/07.

Oh yeah, I need to pick out rain pants.

Spent close to $1,000 on all new equipment. Ordered my new ULA Catalyst this week. I am still fat but have nice gear!

Side Note: Brian from ULA is taking 2 months off in about 5 weeks. If you want a ULA pack and plan an early start you way want to get on the list now.

Well, I can start a countdown again for the 2007 thru after taking a three week hiatus to go to Europe. Saw tons of kids with full backpacks tooling around Italy. They do NOT go ultra light there. ha ha

BTW - I informed my parents about my plans - they were NOT happy.
Oh well.

My mom wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but now she's bragging to everyone. Just another motivator..
Today I seam sealed my tent. What a job!! It's hotter than you-know-where here in FL, and the sand isn't great for keeping up tent stakes. I was sweating my tush off..but it's finally done! I actually got the tent a while ago, but it seemed that every day I had off it threatened to rain. It's still out drying now..
Lately I've just been waking up at night and worrying about odd little things about my hike. Then I can't get back to sleep. Is anyone else doing the same?

Money is what I worry about the most... not just paying off the debt.. but saving as well.

My mom was like, "whatever" when I told her, now she is really getting into it and wants to be a part of it... my dad however does not know.
He has been judgmental on everything I do from day one, so im not expecting anything less.
My husbands parents think he is being crazy and irresponsible but are supportive... they want to know who the hell he married!

i only worry about the money. since i was a kid i just wanted a life of wealth so i could hike forever. but im poor with a son. so i must hike really cheaply or wait long periods of saving to make attempts.im not a man who wants to hike the west or europe or south america. im a guy in total love with the at. i will hike this puppy over and over again if i can.taking till im 45 to get in a completed thru is fine . i allways knew the dream is half the fun even if the reality is less. im so so so thankful to jesus for the trail. just knowing it exists keeps me happy.

Mindi, I haven't had the time to do squat. I'm in survival mode, and luckily don't have time to worry about next year. It sounds nice, though. What part of FL are you in? I'm in Tampa. Yeah, sand doesn't do much for tent pole support. It's the fire ants I worry about. I don't have much for gear, but I've been learning to live with less and less everyday.

What did I do this week in preparation for hiking?

A few days ago I bought a new sleeping bag on ebay rated for 10F.Will test it this fall.
Last night I slept out in my new BA Seedhouse SL1 tent to check for leaks...a few drops came in so I need to seam seal a tiny leak on the door of the fly.
I also tested having a double thickness of foam midsection to better cushion my hip area. That exra 2 ft section of foam helped alot.

Lots going on for me - some of which may well put 2007 AT hike in jeopardy :( .

Blissful, I got a kick out of your parent not being happy. When I informed my parents of the impending journey (several months ago) - they were less than happy too  . To quote my mother, "just get that damn hike out of your system." My father, love him to death, but he's not so happy about it either. Then again, I'm not sure we've EVER been on the same page about much of anything.

Wife - she thinks it's crazy (in a non-supportive "crazy" way). She cannot understand how I could leave my job (it ain't THAT great.....sssheesss).

Oh well, good luck to all - although my '07 plans are now on the brink, there's still a ~20% chance. Otherwise, it's 2008!

there has been trouble brewing on the home front for our 2007 hike. I finally got my husband gun ho excited about it about 4 months ago and we have been breathing in the trail in every way ever since.
Recently I was just offered a promotion at my job that I want to take. I have to hold that position for a year in order for them to consider taking me back in that position when I return. While this is not a life long career for me, it is something I have been working for for the past 5 years( much like the trail) If I do this, it means hiking in 2008. My husband is upset and not understanding. He hates his job and has been holding on to it in preperation for the trail. If we wait it means that he either needs to find another job, or deal with the one he has for another 20 months. He has mentally let go of everything and is excited about the freedom of the trail... as am I.
It sucks that this promotion would come now and I almost wish that it wasnt offered to me so it would make this decision easier. Unfortunately, it is not my decision to make... we have to make it together so it may take awhile... so pray for the best.
Ill keep you all updated...if not 2007, Ill see the next group in 2008

I believe in doors opening and closing for a reason, and maybe next year will be the year for you now that this big door has opened in your career. Even if your hubby might have to stay at his job, maybe the idea you both can do some more backpacking together in the interim, etc will help. I know you had mentioned how you were newbies, and maybe this will give you the opportunity to experience more of the trail life. I waited thirty years for my dream, and while I was waiting I backpacked, learned all I could about the AT, and waited for my son to grow up! - so another year is not too bad and it will go fast!

Whatever happens though keep us informed.

Yeah, it's hard, but one thing I do have is the support of my husband. In fact he is getting more supportive as time goes by - when I have my doubts, he offers encouragment. At first he was against it. But as he has had the experience of seeing trail life - staying at shelters, going to Trail Days, experiencing things, and hopes to do part of the trail also during breaks in his job, he has been more and more for it. And this REALLY helps me. Without his support, I couldn't do it.

So as far as the parents, I can deal with that, they are in NY after all and I'm in VA, and I think in time they will get used to the idea, ha ha. But I have the support of hubby and friends and that helps.

OMG ALHikerGal!!! You take the cake I think w/that counter....which....hmm hmm...is now on my computer too!! That rocks!!!!

What I did today was post a question on WB about my pack cover, had Moosejaw order another pack that I just want to try for my own education, even though I think I've got "the" one w/my ULA Catalyst that I got in a few weeks ago, AND, I've decided on a 3 oz collapsible water bag for camp, so I don't have to go to the water source a million times.

I've pretty much spent the majority of my work days this week surfing WB and TJ, because I'm back into my hyper-obsessed mode again. 7 months, 2 days, 23 hrs, 33 min., 2 sec till my train departs for Georgia!!

I have told my mother; convinced my roommate that I WILL be leaving in the spring, so she needs to find new digs or a new roommate; made arrangements for my pets; am purchasing traveler's checks and saving my massage tips; am paring down my belongings severely; have checked rates on self-storage units. I have my tent and my stove, and a few miscellaneous items.

In 11 days I'll begin an all-raw food diet, and if I can get permission, start climbing stairs at a local high school stadium or the local university stadium.

I still have sooooooo much to do. It's a bit overwhelming to plan to be gone for 6 months, isn't it???

ALHikerGal, thanks for the countdown clock link. It makes sitting here at work a little more tolerable when I can watch the seconds ticking off. :)

What have I done thus far? Built a cat stove and used it to cook on, bought some Lowa boots and have put 75 miles on them so far, and bought a Western Mountaineering sleeping bag. Next purchase will be a tent. Oh, and reading piles of books and spending hours on Trailjournals and WB.

I have a totally supportive spouse, and I am grateful, because I couldn't do this without him backing me up. So far, every friend I've told has been supportive and helpful. I admit that I haven't said anything to my mother, because she's such a wet blanket; I never have gotten around to telling her about a trip I took to Australia three years ago, because I didn't want to listen to all the doom and gloom nonsense. The only person to be discouraging was a guy in a writing group I'm in, who thinks I'm going to be cooked and eaten by rampaging rednecks.

Oh, well. Everyone has an opinion, I guess.

Best of luck to everyone planning on 2007.

to pass the time till march, i decided that im going to be building a lot of my own gear (and by me, i mean me and my grandma) should take up a lot of time building, testing and refining gear. so far my list of to do is a summer quilt, a backpack and a windshirt and windpants. and i plan on giving my other grandma a dehydrator and helping her make some recipies, mostly testing though :D.
man dont you just love grandmas?! now only if they could carry my pack to maine for me... hmm

dropped 1000.00$ in the mail just now. that complets my zeroing of all the money i borrowed to hike last year. thank god i stopped when i did. i can now use the 30 plus fridays paychecks till feb 18th to save.i need 3000 for rent while im gone and gas electric and phone is another 1000 and trip money is 6000 and living and paying bills till launch is the rest of what i can earn with an extra 3500. and i allready figured in 500 a month for the irs. now everything depends on the payment plan i can reach with them. i also have the option to borrow and the option to loose my apt,gas and electric.since i work for a realty, i could stay in an empty apt till i got on my feet on my return. then i would store my belongings. and im going to sell and give some away so ill come home to simplicity. everything depends on my tax problem. i owe around 50,000. but i dont own anything and have only my paychecks. so im thinkin , how much can they take?prayers accepted.

Yesterday, I picked up my package Campmor mailed to me! It contained my hat, fleece, pocketknife, pack towel and sleeping bag liner! I weighed it all and put the info in my Excel spreadsheet. I have it set to calculate the weight of my pack as I gather all of my gear.

I've read TrailJournals and WhiteBlaze - a lot.

Not so bad for a Monday?

Yeah I have a HUGE order waiting to go out to Campmor - as I'm buying for two. Still waiting to see if I will need everything that's on the list as its been adjusted several times. Some items include climate control pants for my son, tent pegs for his sil nylon tent, SOle insoles for me (the superfeet didn't work out at all), Aqua mira, a precip cap, insulate cap for my son, and Yaktrax for him. Debating on a sleeping bag right now for him. Maybe the Sierra Designs 20 degree synthetic.

Went to the outfitter this past weekend for my pack dilemma - now am going to try an Osprey Ariel 65 with a Luna hip belt to see if I can carry it off my lumbar region. Opsrey pack has to come in yet. If not, I'll probably have to go with a clunker - either my son's Mountainsmith or my 7 lb Lowe Apline. This is it for me. I'm getting weary of it all.

the first case of shopping to death . try the opposite of your approch.start way light and underprepared and re fit at neels with there pro help after your 3 days in. your preparing like a city dweller. with a celler full of clothes and an attic full of food. go light and make it an exsperomint. jump into your hike.

Approximately 1388 Hours of staring at a monitor at work.
Speaking of counting, by coincidence just yesterday I started off a countdown by putting up a post-it note with the 'number of days to go', up on my cubical wall. ..........................

theres a FREE countdown clock (in fact, several) on the Web that you can download to your PC. here's the one i use:

http://www.timeleft.info/

enjoy & good luck on all you hikes!
i'll see some of you "Early Birds" in VA in Late April/early May when "Jigsaw" & i will be section-hiking for 2 weeks.:D

I will just counting days and stay a couch potato. I had been really busy enough not to find excuse to exercise.

Hope to see most of you on the trail next year especially Whiteblaze Gatherings.

Hey good news it seems on the weather front - a milder winter is projected and I saw it may be a bit drier too in the northern Georgia /Smokies also. Looks good for an early March start (for me, that is).

It's always snowy in Boston! :)

At least it does look milder down south. Drier in the interior. But wetter than normal weather along the coast.

Nothing like setting yourself up for a disappointing failure. Except maybe ensuring your hike is an experiment in fantasy. . .

Hey Hammock Hanger,

I started a poll in Class of 2007 forum that allows us to choose the 2 week period we'll be starting. You can click on the # and see who is in your group. Thought this would be the closest thing to a list.
