Hi

Up till now I have been using a 1 litre alumium pot, a mini bull alcohol stove with a triangular stand made from bicycle spokes. I use a MSR windshield which was cut down to fit. I also take along a lexan mug to drink from and eat breakfast in.

To save weight I have just purchased a Titanium mug (Vargo Tilite). Therefore I hope to eliminate the lexan mug, aluminium pot (with pot lifter), etc.

However, the mug is quite a bit smaller in diameter that my current system.

What I would like to know is what is the best alcohol stove, stand and windshield combo to use with a vargo mug.

I do not cook as such but just heat water to make soups, rehydrate freeze dried meals and make tea/coffee.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well there is no such thing as "the best" but I would recommend try starting with a soda can stove (a smaller diameter would be even better - like a turboV8 design) and see how that works for you. I would also recommend you use a separate stand instead of a stove where you set your pot on the burner itself since you already have such a small bottom area to start with.

Once you get a good stove, the "best" part comes from tweaking the windscreen and potstand to work best with your pot and burner combo.

based on what I found with the Heineken pot I would suggest starting with an empty tea light candle tin as a burner and adjusting the amount of water based on what you really need instead of the "2 cups water" standard.

If you'd like to purchase, I think one of the smaller Brasslite models could suit you well, you might be able to find one of their old Turbo F models. For DIY, check out zenstoves.net (http://zenstoves.net/Stoves.htm) for ideas, especially the "Cat Can (http://zenstoves.net/CatCanStove.htm)" and "Chimney (http://zenstoves.net/ChimneyStove.htm)" models. The idea is to get a narrower flame to suit your narrower pot. As for the stand and windshield, that will take some fiddling to figure out.

If you're looking to just 'heat water' in a titanium mug(which I'm guessing is fairly small in diameter), Hog On Ice's tea candle stove may be a good place to start.
