View Full Version : Most valued posession

:-? On every long distance or thru hike we all have something we just couldn't live without, sometimes a couple of things. A stove that was better than any you used before,or in might be a tarp, a special food that worked for you. My thing I couldn't live without is waterless hand cleaner. Sometimes you can't wash for days and your body is a germ factory and by killing germs you prevent sickness. It may sting but it will kill germs on a cut or scrape. As it is alcohol it also works as a fire starter in a pinch. I would say my most valued posession on my thru hike was waterlesss hand cleaner, what was yours?

When you say waterless hand cleaner is that hand sanitizer or is that truly waterless hand cleaner such as GoJo?

My most valued posession? Hmmm. Must be the seedless watermelon. I carry that kind because it weighs less than the one with seeds.

But seriously... that's a hard question to answer. Food has to be right up there. Extra clothing and a sleeping bag is neck & neck with food. In some areas a map & compass would be the most important - but not on the AT. Good question - with no easy answer.

Do I have to be a thru to post here?

So far, it's my JRB No Sniveler. I use various hammocks, tarps, stoves, etc - but I always have my NS with me no matter what other gear I have along. Other than my pack and survival gear, it's probably the only gear I bring on every trip.

I know what you mean Doctari. I tried to think of anything in my pack I haven't tried doing without or something different. All of that stuff is just stuff. I can't be like Neo and sing praises all day to my hammock and stove (I do like them both) but the one thing that is out there that lets me get on the trail is my wife. Without her I couldn't do what I do.

Thanks Trail Angel Dixicritter.

A small ziplock of cheap paper kitchen napkins.

They work well for personal hygiene use like blowing your nose (I just can't bring myself to do that in a bandana that you need to use again:( ) and they don't fall apart when wet like TP. This really saved the day on some arid and dusty Western trails. Of course, always pack it out and LNT etc...

mp3/fm radio, external speakers as well as head phones, and several memory cards with tons of tunes. it really helps when you want to bust out those big miles, as well as at the end of the day when you want to catch some news or some npr in camp.

Most valued posession?...

My quad-speaker boombox with built-in 30W amp and mega-BASS. A lot of people give me dirty looks as I walk by them but deep down, I know they are really enjoying the music and want MORE so I just turn the volume up higher (because I know that's what they want) and keep a walkin'!.

Works for me :)

Unfortunately Doctari and Rock, there may come a time when you'll have to do without, or the other way around. There are lots of things thru-hiking teaches and independence is one, for both. How to survive on a daily basis without the other. Of course, usually they're only a few days and/or a phone call away, but their spirit and love will always be there forever.

An old school regular Walkman. Along with a pound and a half of mixed tapes. Some Sam Bush for the climbs and some Peter Rowan for the mountain tops.

I feel what you are saying Sly. I've done a lot without her over the last 18 years (anniversary was yesterday) but I still love the fact that she is there waiting when I get done.

Sorry for your loss man.

Seriously, my most prized posession on any hike is my tent. My tent is my home/castle so it has to be comfortable, water-proof, have adequate ventilation and be fairly attractive. My backpack would be next followed by my sleeping bag. I am also very particular about having lots of dehydrated (light-weight) foodstuffs and then next would be my first aid kit. I have a big dog too (a lab) so his needs would have to be met (if I ever took him along with me). I would most likely be looking tohave him carry his own pack. He's a male Black Lab/Chow mix and VERY freindly (yes, I know everyone say's that about their dog...hehe.

In the days before Leki's, I'll bet most would have listed their hiking pole.

What else will save you from face plants and growling dogs and becomes burnished smooth with your own sweat?

I got mine on the porch of the Ranger Cabin at Roaring Brook just north of Katahdin, and couldn't even consider getting rid of it towards the end, even though it had worn down to the height of a cane. Most definitely my most important "thing" on my one and only LD hike.

On all other hikes it would be a beat up bird book with annotations in the margins on "firsts", or noteworthy sightings. Each brings back more memories than a photo.

 12 pack of condoms. Never know who you may run into on those lonely trail nights. When your "done" with one, you can just toss 'em on the trail..... or use 'em as water carriers, waterproof sock liners, make balloon animals, suffocate a snorer by putting over his/her head, etc.....

To lighten the weight, be sure to remove the outer box. You "ultralighters" out there can even remove the individual wrapper, but it sometimes makes 'em a little dry. Super ultralighters can merely bring one: just wash & reuse!!

Yes I'm kidding, so don't reply with hate messages!

Hefty bag used as pack liner. Having bone dry gear after hiking all day in rain just rules.

Insulation- Being able to sleep warm is huge. If I am too cold to sleep it takes a huge toll on me mentally.

Food- As important mentally as it is physically. I usually carry an excessive amount of Nutella and Snickers.
