View Full Version : A place that sells Tyvek
Hey all, I've seen a few discussions on how hard it is to find Tyvek, which makes a great groundcloth for those of us that use tents. I found this website, that not only sells ultralite gear, but sells 4.5' x 7' pieces of Tyvek for $6.95. Just thought I'd pass the info on, just in case anyone else has had the same problem I've had in finding the stuff. Happy Hiking!!
So sorry.....

Another good source is into the wind (http://www.intothewind.com/shop/Repair_and_Kitemaking/Fabric/Tyvek), if you want to buy it by the yard (60" width).

I second Ebay. There is a seller who also makes alcohol stoves. He sells Tyvek for 1.69 per foot (piece is 7 foot wide) plus 3.00 shipping. It has no printing or graphics on it.
Will Tyvek fray when cut? Do you have to hem the edges of it?
Here'a a link to his auction. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Tyvek-1016-CHEAPEST-NO-PRINTING-PURE-WHITE-7-FEET-WIDE_W0QQitemZ320008068241QQihZ011QQcategoryZ36120 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

a friend bought a tyvek coverall from lowes for about ten bucks. out of it he made a whole little family of stuff sacks. two legs, two arms and two out of the torso. one has a zipper for his sleeping bag. i might do the same.

Yup ...that's where I got mine. Plus, they have the lighter weight "kite" Tyvek.

I was passing a new home site last week and stopped to ask if they had any tyvek they could spare. After 5 min., I walked away with a 10 foot long roll that had about 1/4 inch left on it. I only asked for about 8 foot, and they gave me the roll!
If you don't ask, you don't get.
Cheers,

Ok, so now how do I make it softer?

You could wash it. Or just wait, it'll get softer with age. (why wear it out?)
I was going to suggest the same thing: (asking at a construction site) It's the easiest way to get it. But i see that many construction folks are now using inferior or fiberglass impregnated rival wraps. Make sure you get "TYVEK" by Dupont. not TYPAR, or something close.

Best way is to go to a laundromat, for the front loading washers, and wash it in hot water (no soap needed) it comes out soft as a piece of cloth. I've had a piece softened this way almost 3 years now and it's still in real good shape.
