i did a search and couldnt find anything on this so im starting a thread.

has anyone done an interactive a.t. map where you can put in a place name (shelter, attraction, etc.) and zoom to it. maybe with distances of the location from each direction, with side trails and such? would that not be cool beans?

hopefully it is right under my nose and someone will kindly rub my face in it.

yeah, i have one from maptech that kinda has that. they don't have pictures of every shelter, but they have some pictures that are a part of the program and you can print out the maps. all the quads are included so you kinda have to track the trail to rpint out the part that you need, if that makes any sense. there is some data included, but less then you'd get from the A.T. trail guides.

there is a file you can download to run on google earth that has every AT shelter way point, it is VERY cool! because you can follow the whole AT, zoom in, zoom out.

you get google earth by downloading it. it's a free download. i don't remember where i got the Maptech program, but you can find it by doing a google. mine is an older version, the one's i see on their website are pretty steep ($100). i think i found mine at either a computer show or on ebay. whatever, is was a lot cheaper.

Find the overlay here: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php?Number=21124

Has all the shelters. Of course, Google Earth is eminently zoomable, plus allows you to see the mountains heights dimensionally and from any angle.

World Wind has a complete AT Trail overlay. It's a huge program to download tho.. like 65mb and it's a resource hog when running. I still prefer Googl Earth.

I just downloaded the Google Earth version. Really neat stuff. I'll look at it good tomorrow but nothing beats a good paper map IMO.

welcome to google earth, it can be addicting, especially once you start dropping in overlays. The AT is cool to see, but the PCT is even more impressive. It's amazing to see how the PCT cuts right through the Sierras, they look impassable on Google Earth, its very very cool.

Oh, and because the PCT is more wide open, its possible to see sections of the actual trail, especially, in the early desert sections.

There are some pretty amazing things captured on Google Earth. Car accidents, strange aircraft, concerts, crop circles, etc....

My friend showed me a google earth keyhole that took you up to the middle of nowhere in Canada. In the middle of the thousands acres of woods some logging company had cut a HUGE smiley face in to the trees. Somebody had too much time on their hands but it was awesome.

I just downloaded all the AT hacks. Katadhin is very neat, but the AT/shelters hack is not very accurate. The shelters are right, but the AT is is in the wrong spot in the areas of NJ that I looked at. Still worth the effort. Rutherford shelter in NJ is neat to see from space.

It is fun to find those anomalies and strange things... One fun is the Stratosphere Tower in Vegas... If you look for it, you will find the tower is missing, they photo-shopped it out, BUT.... They left the shadow! D'Oh!
