Going through my maps here at home (and it nice to be home) I have ,y #1 AT map that covers the BMT from Springer Mountain up to about mile 11.6, I have my Trails Illustrated Tellico and Ocoee River map that covers from about mile 72.0 to mile 191.4, and I have my GSMNP map that covers the BMT through the Smokies.

What I don't have is a map that covers from 11.6 to 72.0. The BMT website recommends:

Trails Illustrated Topo Map #781 - Tellico and Ocoee Rivers (http://www.ngmapstore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=330&itemType=PRODUCT) covers from Scroggin Knob (near Rich Mt. Wilderness in Georgia) through the Cohuttas, Ocoee and Hiwassee Rivers, and Citico, Slickrock, and Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Areas. New edition (released June 2006) shows BMT in continuous, yellow highlight across both map panels. $9.95
USFS Cohutta and Big Frog Wildernesses Map (http://www.fs.fed.us/conf/maporder.htm) (TN/GA), $5
USFS Cherokee NF Topo Map (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/cherokee/maps2003/MapOrderForm.pdf)
USFS Trail Map - Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citico Creek Wildereness (https://mivasecure.abac.com/foreststore1/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NCm5&Category_Code=MAPTN), $6
Various Smokies Maps: (http://www.smokiesstore.org/browse.cfm/2,65.html) Trails Illustrated - Great Smoky Mtns National Park Map #229 is $9.95. Regular trail map of paper is $1 and also available at Twentymile Ranger Station (BMT route is highlighted in yellow).

But it doesn't say what the mileage of the trail that each of these maps cover. I have narrowed down the section I need to probably the Cherokee NF map and or the Cohutta and Big Frog Wilderness Map. Anyone out there know which map(s) I need to finish out my collection?

well the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citco Creek Wilderness map covers from Farr Gap to the US 129 bridge - 175 to 182 approximately and includes the topo for some of the stuff around that section but does not indicate where the BMT goes - for example the section of topo on the other side of the bridge up to where 28 splits off of 129 is shown but the trail is not shown - note this is a map labeled "Slightly revised July 1996" so I am not surprised the BMT is not shown - hopefully the FS will have revised this map by now but I don't know if they have or not.

Sgt,

Earlier this month, I just overnighted on part of the BMT at the southern end of the Citico Creek Wilderness. I had ordered the USFS Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock/ Citico Creek map, and it was *NOT* updated with the BMT. However, in this area the BMT mostly follows pre-existing trails that are marked on the map, so if you know where to look, you can find it.

http://www.bmta.org/bmt_const.htm has free download maps of the BMT in Tennessee and North Carolina. My trip was on Map 11. This section does contain one segment of the BMT that was built new, and did not appear on my USFS map. However, since the online map looks like it was taken directly from the USFS map, I had no trouble pencilling it in myself.

For a report on my trip, and some important notes about the rather confusing renumbering of trails, see this post. (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12195&page=2) (post #39 near the bottom)

Happy hiking, and enjoy your time home to the max!

Thanks guys. Actually I knew most all of this already, so may main interest is still not answered. I'm hoping someone that has the whole set can tell me which one I am missing. I have most of the trail already on maps, I am missing a 60 mile section and I'm trying to figure out which map I need to get to finish it out:

Map............................................... Mile Points...........Notes
1. AT map #1 of Springer Mountain......0.0 to ~11.6........Got It
2.???????????????????????????????......~11.6 to ~ 72.0...What Map?
3. Tellico and Ocoee Rivers................~72.0 to ~191.4...Got It
4. GSMNP Map.................................~191.4 to 287.6....Got It

So what I am looking for is what map do I need for section 2 on my list.

:o Oops, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were asking which of the listed maps you should get. Can't help you on that one, but good luck!

I'm reposting this here in case someone is looking for the same answer - I ended up doing the ground work myself from Iraq. :p

The answer was also not so simple. I ended up making the solution myself from resources on the web. So here goes...

1. 0.0 to 65.3. From Springer Mountain to Big Flat Mountain you can use this file I made: http://hikinghq.net/user_projects/missing_ga2.pdf . This file is an Adobe Acrobat format and allows you to print your own maps of the section on standard 11x8.5 paper - all you need is your own color printer, paper, and a way to protect the maps on the trail. It will take 3 pages for the maps printed front to back, plus one extra page front to back if you want the trail profiles. Special thanks to www.georgiahikes.com (http://www.georgiahikes.com/) for the maps and most of the trail profile.

2. 56.3 to 191.4. Hudson Gap to Twentymile Ranger Station in the GSMNP. Trails Illistrated map of Tellico and Ocoee Rivers #781. http://www.ngmapstore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=330&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=54&iSubCat=117&iProductID=330

3. 179.2 to 287.6. Intersection of the Slickrock Trail and Stiffknee trail to Davenport Gap. Trails Illustrated map of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park #229. http://www.ngmapstore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=330&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=54&iSubCat=117&iProductID=260

Also, there is a databook in production, but not out yet. So I also put my own version for a temporary fix. The file was put together from info at the BMT website (www.bmta.org (http://www.bmta.org)) and is available here: http://hikinghq.net/user_projects/BMT.doc . This is in an editable word document so you can add your own data if you want - also some sections are a lot more detailed than others. The section in TN/NC are sometimes compiled checking the trail constuction maps and entries to places marked on the map but I am not exactly sure what is there are simple listed as a question mark. I set up a version of this document to print in a small, pocket sized format that should only take three sheets (front to back) of paper to print the entire booklet using Adobe Acrobat http://hikinghq.net/user_projects/BMT.pdf

Wow, sgt rock, these are some great resources! I definitely feel like a fool for not finding it until now.

I checked a site that I used for mapping some running routes. I was very surprised to find that they added a new option. You can also view your route as a topo map. I put in the lat and long for the start of the BMT as the address and it brought up a topo for Springer Mt. I'm not sure what to do with this new tool, but I'm intrigued with its possibilities for mapping areas that aren't part of the park system. I hope this can help.

Dog-gone if I can find where I got them, but I downloaded all the maps except one for Big Frog, including the Smokies park map. If you still want them let me know, I send them to you.
I the mean time I will try figure where I found them.
