I know maps arent a necessary thing on the trail but i like looking at them to see where i am going. If you use them Where is the best place to get them?

Best time to buy the maps from the ATC is from (approx) Thanksgiving to Christmas. The entire map set is (approx) $155; however, at the annual sale you get the maps, the data book, and all the guidebooks for $170.

You may or not want to carry the guidebooks on your thru, but for future section hikes the info on how to get to trailheads and trail history makes the extra $15 an incredible bargain.

ATC maps are much better than the maps you can print at home from software packages.

Maybe not necessary but always good to at least review before a section, you never know when you will have to bail or seek help for someone else. Plus scanning the maps of a part. section can help enlighten you of other things/opportunites nearby.

Stick:

The Weasel is a big proponent of the Maptech product and loves to use its capabilities to map out various sections of the Trail. As a section hiker, I would consider using if I could be guaranteed of annual map updates.
