Any single trail transversing a mountain chain is bound to miss some great places. There have been many times that I have been on a hike and said to myself "wow, I wish the AT went through here!!"

Where would you put the AT? Complete disregard for logistics and the need for a linear trail is a must;) .

My top three:

Grandfather Mountain in NC, the ladders are a fright!

Allegheny National Forest, PA...the 'mountains' of my childhood.

Acadia NP, of course!!!!

John Muir Trail - An epic 211-mile hike for everyone's life list that starts in Yosemite and ends on Mt. Whitney.

This week the Fresno Bee is starting a great series on some reporters trying to hike it..

The Scottish Highlands, the English Lake District, Norway, the Alps....

Realistically in the US East: Monangahela National Forest including Spruce Knob in West Virginia, Catskills, Adirondacks, the Lincoln Ridge plus Camels Hump and Mansfield in Vermont.

Good call. The northern sections of the Long Trail are awesome. Great rocky peaks, amazing views, awesome old and new 'camps' (ie, cabin-style shelters) and a well-maintained trail by the GMC. Plus it traverses about a dozen ski areas and ends at the border of Canada. For a shorter trail on the east coast, you just can't beat the LT.

And there's a brewery named after it - with damn good ale!

Beautiful and unique section in NJ that is about 3 miles East and parallel to the AT. I wish everyone that goes through NJ could see this section.

From Wawayanda State Park AT - WARP - Bearfort Trail (Warwick Turnpike, Hewitt, NJ) - cut back to AT via Ernest Walter Trail right near the NJ/NY State Line (on trail).

I also think the trail should be strategically placed when entering resupply towns:

Direct to Quincy's Pizza in Damascus
Direct to McGrath's Irish Pub in Killington
Direct to Hanover Hot Tubs in Hanover

Happy hiking!

Thanks Slogger. Haven't been back to VA in WAY too long.

I officially change my suggestion to strategically route the AT in Damascus to Cisicly's Pizza.

Happy hiking!

Realistic east coast points would include Cathedral Pines in CT (before the hurricane tore them down), the northern section of the Long Trail, a big chunk of the more remote portions of the Catskills and Adirondacks, Hocking Hills in southeast Ohio, as well as Peaks of Otter (VA), Gulf Hagas (ME) and Grandfather Mountain.
