Campmor Tarp-10'x8'-13oz. $65.00
Speer Tarp-10'x8'-13oz. $100.00

Is there anything about the Speer tarp that would make it worth $35.00 more other than the Speer name? Thanks.

Neo, have you used either of these tarps?

Campmor sells the Equinox tarp. I am assuming that is the one they are talking about.

I have the campmor equinox silnylon tarp, and have been very happy with it. Owned it about 2 years now, holding up well. I seam sealed the seams. A good number of well placed cloth tie outs along the center seam, and the grommets are holding up very well along the edges.

I have the Campmor/Equinox tarp and I love it. I pitch it as tight as I can and the grommets are still holding up perfect. My only complaint is that I wish it had a few more tie out points inside the perimeter.

I have the 10' X 12' - great tarp - could use more internal tie-out points (has two on ridge line)

I have all three Campmor Equinox tarps. (Well, I sold the 10x12, but I did use it once or twice.)

The 5x8 and the 8x10 are both decent tarps, but they have what could be a fatal flaw -- the main seam runs along the short dimension. That means that when you set up the 5x8 in a typical A-frame tarp pitch, the main seam gets a lot of stress in the wrong direction -- tightening the pitch pulls the seam open. The 8x10 is the same way.

Ideally, the main seam runs the length of the tarp, so you are pulling it lengthwise. (I hope I am making this clear, but I'm not sure.) Here is a photo of the 8x10, in which you can see the main seam running across the tarp from side to side (look closely):

The seam design works okay if you use the 5x8 in the half-pyramid pitch, where you stake down the long side, and use a trekking pole in the middle of the other long side, and stake down the corners. (Wish I could find a photo.)

Thru-hiker.com has an article about this:

Finally, Backpackinglight has a public article on the Equinox tarps:

In short, I like my tarps, and I like the low price, and I don't use them in very high winds.
