There was mention of a class of 2007 pool tournament. I also saw a thread about great bars/pubs along the AT. So, how about adding a class of 2007 beer tour?

The Cleveland area's got a chain bar (The Winking Lizard) that does an annual 100-beer sampling beer tour. You get the list and as you sample each one, they mark it off. I bet we could put together an awesome sampling list for the trip. Last one to Katahdin with all the beers sampled wins. Yes, last. I have absolutely no chance of being first, so why would I make that the goal?!

Sounds like 1Pint is searching for a new name. How about Most Pints Wins?

cute Tin Man, although I'd definitely lose the Most Pints contest. I don't drink much but I like variety and I like trying new ones. Hence, the suggested beer tour.

You should get in touch with StarLyte, she's from Cleveland...

Hmmm, this sounds interesting! I'll certainly want to check out some pubs along the way next year. Check out my Web site: http://www.viewsandbrews.com/

So you can see how this would interest me :D

The could make a beer commercial about it...

Hiking, Hosteling, Smokey Mountain Brewery, Yuengling Brewery, Long Trail In...

Reminds me of that saying.... (beer cooler in hand) Lets goto the mountains and show me your busch...

You're funny Twofiddy......

yes they also have a bar bus here in Cleveland, it's posted on cleveland.com, and everyone piles in......there's a big waiting list though......

I'm just thinking about all my beer drinking AT friends that aren't on this list......

Beer is not my bag.

Good merlot is.

You hear that.........that's a few of my friends applauding.........:banana

About ten years ago we met a southbound thruhiker that was in the process of writing the "alcoholics guide to the AT". He was attempting to locate the best bars along the trail within a resaonable distance. He was attempting to sample all the contenders. I dont know if he ever stumbled off the trail at Springer.

I'm game; count me in.

Ever had Celis Wheat? Rolled, not shaken. Has a slight pecan taste. Dessert brew.

My dream is to hike pub to pub in Scotland or England.

I can't edit that last response.

When you get to Hiawassee, GA, go to Monte Albans (Mexican) and have a 32 oz frosty mug of the amber beer they have on draft. Mmmmmm Mmmmm Gooder'n campbell soup.

This is something I have thought about doing too! Unfortunately, I'll be using up reserves for the AT next year so it will be awhile before I can do something like that. So many things I want to do!!

Ugh, I'm horribly shy about that sort of thing, but since you pushed me out of the nest in front of everybody, here goes....

Hey StarLyte!
Yeah, I'm close to the CVNP, so not too far from you. I'd actually thought about posting for a Clev-area carpool to head to The Gathering, but I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to get there.

I've noticed a couple other people on WB are around our general area. It'd be fun to get together for a day hike now and then.

Yes, I can see your interest is strictly for research purposes only. ;-)

The Wink allows 365 days to finish 100 beers. So maybe we should figure 50 beers max for the avg 6 mns a thru-hiker will have to complete The Research Project. Afterall, we're only near towns 1 night a week compared to the urbanites who can go out whenever.

HapKiDo got us started on the list of suggested beers....

1. Celis White

Okay, let's see...for microbreweries, there is the Moat House in North Conway, NH and then of course Long Trail in VT, and Great Barrington Brewery in MA, I guess Gritty's in Portland is a little too far, but I do remember visiting a microbrewery after hiking Bald Pate but I can't remember the name and then there is Kennebec River Brewery (seems appropriate) in ME, Ramapo in NY but they don't have a pub any more, and ... well ... that's a start of potential places...and I could continue, but I'll stop there. :D Yes, research is important.

There's a restaurant in the Atlanta, GA, area that boasts of having 100 different type of beer. I can't recall the name but I'll do some research and see what I get.

This stop would, of course, be for those SBers. As a NBer, if I hit that type of place and actually sample a few, I'm likely to forget my name and why I'm in Atlanta to begin with.

The Calhouns in Gatlinburg has their own microbrewery. Some good stuff there.

Ha, all this talk about brews has gotten me thirsty. Looks to me like I won't be the only one making sure that there is a supply of booze in my pack at all times. There is nothing like sacrificing water to carry that extra liter of alcohol. Except when you take a sip from what you think is water but turns out to be Vodka. Anyone else have this happen to them? What are your favorite alcoholic drinks while backpacking?

I prefer moonshine.

Pokey2006
10-30-2006, 02:07
I was so bummed I never got to try moonshine. Next time.

Did that "alcoholic's guide to the AT" ever get published? If not, one of you 2007 hikers should take it upon yourselves to write one! I'd love to read it.

Are ya comin to the PA Ruck? I might have a nip or two of spring water.

Actually, that stuff LW gets is way tastier than the rubbing alcohol they make up here. Vanilla and cinnamon was a nice touch, too. Halloweeny.

Lone Wolf, if I do go to PA Ruck, the only reason -- and I mean the ONLY -- will be to try your southern version of rubbing alcohol! I hope to pull it off!

Dawn, maybe you can do a new patch based on something like drinking a microbrew from each state along the AT, with a focus on microbrews from as close to the trail as possible... I guess you could call it 'brew-blazing'....LOL

Don't forget to stop off at Helen Ga. on yer way north, it is a wonderful little Bavarian town right off the trail, just like walking into Germany, has plenty of beer to sample too !

I'm not sure how many of you guys use an alcohola stove, but Everclear and even down to Vodka work perfect for fuel as well as post hiking refreshments. I have never had a problem even burning rubbing alcohol. I have never gotten to try moonshine but I imagine it tastes much like the other grain alcohols that I have had, crappy but gets you drunk...

Where you gettin` your shine at son ? What I taste goes down like water and has no resemblance to rubbing alchohol, more like "spring water" pronounced with a british accent "sprinng watta" ;-) and gets ya drunker than anything you can buy in any store . I dont think I`d be wastin` any of it in a stove either lessen it was an emergency !

This sounds like a great idea!! I was wondering myself which bars along the way are good to stop at. I collect beer caps. If anyone has any cool micro brews around where they live and want to send me caps that would awesome! By the way... is there an unoffical beer of the AT?

This is hardly an original idea. After hiking the trail even a few states you quickly realize this is exactly what a majority of thruhikers do. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, in fact it is what I do also. I'm just saying most thruhikes are beer tours.

:-? i'm not sure anyone will match brett and andy (ga>me "01") for their beer tour. those guys hiked into the night to make it to the bar, hiked from the bar back to the trail when it closed. and even claimed to have done "negative" miles hiked back down the trail cause they missed the long trail brewery!!!! those guys could tear up the trail!!! they were always soaked with sweat and stunk to high heaven!!!!!!:sun :sun
