I wonder if this works...

I'm gonna reach way out on a limb here and guess... no. Even if it would be edible, alcohol would probably sublimate with the water. Welcome to the boards though. :D speedy

Alcohol evaporates in heat.

But it's FREEZE-dried...

Guaranteed to work if you rehydrate with vodka.

Sorry guys - the same process that removes the water from freeze dried products will also cause the ethanol to be removed.
This is an explanation of how freeze-drying works (http://home.howstuffworks.com/freeze-drying.htm)
Given that the boiling point of ethanol is 78.3 C, and that temperature is significantly below the boiling point for water at 100 C, the ethanol would vaporize during the freeze drying process and be removed with the water.

Actually....not so much. I would not bank on the idea that "jello jewel" types of things dehydrate reversibly.

As for dehydration, the ethanol would be driven off first, as 95% ethanol.

If I wanted to rehydrate something in alcohol, BTW, I'd recommend dried fruit as far superior to gelatin. (Yum.)

Check this out, though: No-Chill Jello. The problem: it is sold in 5 lb bags...intended for "jello-wrestling" events. Maybe not the best dessert on the trail.

Nevertheless, if you wanted to make a jello-like dessert that is kosher and vegan, you could experiment with carrageenan as the thickening agent. People freak when they see it on ice cream labels, but it's just seaweed extract. Starting with a vegan recipe for jello, you might come up with on-the-trail jello jewels.

Not that I do this or anything - but your best alcohol to weight ratio is Bacardi 151.

And it's a good emergency back-up fuel. (or at least that's a justification I use :) )

Everclear is better.

But if you drink stove fuel you deserve what you get. :D

I prefer to think of it as "burning a beverage in a stove."

Nice spin. Mind if I borrow it?

Everclear (Pure Grain Alcohol) would provide the most ethanol for the weight, but Bacardi sure taste better from what I can remember.

True.

But if pressed to describe the taste of either 'beverage' I think the simple phrase "stove fuel" speaks volumes. ;)

I was raised that you never wasted meat or good liquor....although Bacardi 151, being mixable, doesn't rise quite to that level.

Yes, my dad taught me that whiskey worthy of being consumed neat should never, under any circumstance, be mixed with anything except ice...and that, only if you're weak.

Burned? I do not think he would burn good liquor to stay alive. He would keep the commandment and trust God.
