We (the Access Damascus committee) have put routers into both the Baja Cafe and in Sicily's Pizza, so anyone visiting will have wireless access in both those places. We've also purchased a new computer for the two restaurants.

This funding comes from fees paid to the town to be listed on the town's website, and on a small amount of county money given to the committee.

Here are the three websites I do as a volunteer for the town and area:

www.damascus.org (http://www.damascus.org)

www.traildays.info (http://www.traildays.info)

www.vacreepertrail.us (http://www.vacreepertrail.us)

If you're saying that the access is free, then Wow and thanks! It's always great to see people working towards free wireless internet access. :D speedy

I met at least one one time out there hiking in the Smokies, dude said he needed to continue to do his work while he was out for a two week hike on the trail.

I don't know how many actually carry them, but some do bounce them from town to town to do their journal, photos, change out their tunes...

More and more towns are going wireless, some for free. I think Bland is wireless now.

If I do it, I'll either carry or bounce a tmobile mda for updating trail journals and checking emails and such. I just like the idea more from the standpoint of being an American than a hiker. We're way behind other countries in ubiquitous high speed connectivity. Admittedly most aren't nearly as big and they don't have the last mile issues like we do. In South Korea, it's not uncommon to have home connections fast enough to watch streaming HDTV over the internet. I'm all for anyone doing what they can to help us catch up. Sorry if I sound like a nerd, but network design and security is what my degree is in. :D speedy

Not a laptop, but my phone (http://www.bashour.com/wired/images/Sprint%20PPC%206700.jpg) has advanced internet capability - it can view sites like WB and others without any problems (not some small phone version of a website) and with enough bandwidth I can easily connect to my home PC and control things here. If the attached camera was a bit better, I would use it as a camera on the trail.

Yeah, free, and we've purchased a couple of new computers where you can just plug in the card from your camera and download photos to a CD, which we also try to provide at about $1 each. The wireless signal reaches out about a block or so. Returning hikers and other visitors are increasingly asking for wireless access, so we may eventually put in a couple of range extenders and make the whole town wireless. It's interesting to see the electronics carried by hikers, although carrying a laptop is a rarity. Tech Boy came through a couple of years ago and he seemed to have everything available.
