I totally agree with you. Just because he is talked about on here doesn't make him a legend. Other than that he is no different than any other thru-hiker.

Please explain it to me like I'm a 3 year old cuz I'm just not getting it. Other than people talking about him on WB, what is so extraordinary about this individual that would put him in his own category and make him a soon-to-be trail legend? I'm having trouble seeing the correlation.

I nominate Model T as the 2006 trail legend. MS just doesn't qualify as a trail legend IMO simply because he had a long-running thread on WB.

MS is anything but a trail legend..more like poster child for what NOT to do..this has definatly gotten to the point of stupidity, come on..what a freakin joke..lets see...:-? ,1st..pack wayyyyy to heavy..but seeing as how he aint really carrying it much, we let that pass. 2nd taking wayyyyyy to long..if he was actualy NOT slacking the trail to death and carrying "his" pack the "whole" trail and not crawling into every possible hut, hostel, motel, house or privy and was actualy walking instead of finding ways NOT to or alienating lots of other people by just being rediculous ..ie ..pissing and farting or just plain being an ass. he would have been just another dude that fell out. and he would be at home eating strange food and drinking wine ALONE. and this wouldnt even be an issue.. yes its interesting to read what he has done, and a small part of me wants him to complete his hike, but a LEGEND? most definetly NOT

you guys are smart and im not being siily but you dont understand starlyte or ms. starlytes def of AT trail legond contains some of it. and her pick of earl demonstrates the eye of the beholder part. but theres more. much more. and if you love the trail for good reasons and if you preach the trail allways to anyone who will listen and care strongly for the trail and if shivers run thru thinking about or walking on the trail then you begin to see but theres more. way more. a trail legond must be loved by the trail. and the trail communitys admiration is also an ingredient.. what do i mean loved by the trail? well the appalachian trail has the combined spirit of all who loved her living within the topsoil of it. and she remembers little kids first hikes and there screems of joy. and remembers there adulthood and how she could allways call the used to be little boys and girls back. back to her warm summer soil. her walkway to the mountains. her beautiful hearts in maine and georgia and her outstreached hands could reach far into the city to grab more trapped little boys and girls who needed a walk on her clearways.she holds lone wolf and pirate and wee willy captive and starlyte and ms and bob peoples and crutch and taco and each one of us.captive. a trail legond must be held closely captive to her . unable to seperate without a strong pulling at ones soul. minnisota smith contains this need for her. he is pulled and now since hes a thru hiker to be,... certanly a legond. the public hiking folks at large,..need legonds. and all they need as proof,.. is to see the pulling. when they see a man pulled to do such things as live the thruhikers dream,..... they call for the legondator,..who crowns the one to be. in this case ,. the legondator is a community of 10 000. white blaze hearby pronounces the hiker a legond. all those against speak now. all those in favor,... enjoy.

I haven’t read all that’s been written about Minnesota Smith. I haven’t the stomach for it.

It has been sad, realizing while reading other threads, that Minnesota Smith and those who care about him will read what has been written about him, yet he can never receive the opportunity to fully defend himself.

We are permanently libeling someone, and now you want to make it “official.”

He is hiking his own hike. I hope he completes it, and something valuable comes from his efforts.

Gotta agree with LW. He's just another hiker, nothing special that I can see (except for the uniqueness we all have in us). Some of you guys are obsessed with MS, I don't see what the big deal is. He shot his mouth off online before he started, now he's out there doing his thing, hiking his hike. Big deal. Hope he finished, just like everyone else.

Yeah, I'm not so sure if they are following him because he represents their beliefs, or they are hoping to God that he will get hit in the head with a branch and somehow reality will snap into place.

Either way, it's a case of the underdog. Go Cubs.

After seeing his photo finally I see why he tried to criticize me for having a full beard and head of hair in a past post.

In fact, that explains a lot.

He said, "but [Tha Wookie] looks like someone well along the way of putting on a Sasquatch constume. Man, Wookie seriously needs some Nair and razor work."

Wook,
Your comment about Minnesota Smith represents the thread followers beliefs is a bit off in my case.

Actually, most of the stuff that MS ever posted I disagree with 100%.

That said, he is out there, stirring the pot, practicing our great american freedom of speech, alientating himself, alientating others but in general just doing his thing. That is what I have come to respect. He is out there. I am not.

Either way, he will be talked about for years to come.....certainly not in all glowing terms.

Have you met MS personally? All the talk that has gone back and forth paints him to be an evil monster. He is a decent, intelligent and likeable man. He may lack some social skills, but so do I, and amazingly so do most of the rest of us. Honestly, give the man a break. His only crime is being a little different.

To the best of my knowledge he has done nothing to physically harm or intimidate or threaten anyone either on or off the trail. His initials are not carved into every shelter. He has not given hikers or the AT a bad name by appearing drunk or stoned in every town. Has he stolen anything from anyone? Has he damaged anyones property?

Donjuan, read the posts I entered on your thread where you were contemplating a winter SOBO hike. I think I tried to be fair, and respectful to you and express myself in a decent way, even if I truthfully thought your plan was foolish and dangerous. MS deserves the same respect.

Legend or not, consider the following:

1. The mantra of AT hiking is "hike your own hike". Perhaps MS was foolish enough to believe this. 90% of the comments about MS relate to him doing exactly this: pack is too big, too much water, too much TP, too few miles, etc. etc. etc. Lets not forget his major crime: skipping ahead and actually riding in a car to do so.

2. Read some of his entries in shelter registers. All that I have read are strictly PG and express his honest opinion of the day and attempt to pass along useful information to other hikers. BTW, a lot of families with children day hike the AT. Keep that in mind when you decide what you need to write. I am sure MS has chosen his words carefully so as not to be offensive or critical of anyone.

3. MS has always attempted to be helpful to other hikers. Anytime I have spoken to him he has asked me to pass along the names of hikers he has met, along with trail/shelter conditions and water availability. Hardly the selfish SOB so many have described.

4. MS has proven that thruhiking the AT is as much a mental game as a physical game. He deserves respect for what he has been able to do through nothing more than absolute determination. Some are ultra-lite gurus, some claim to hike 30-40 MPD, some say they finished first, some will attempt to hike the AT in 40 days, some will try SOBO in winter, I have more respect for the absolute will power shown by MS.

5. There is one fact that everyone is going to have to accept. MS has hiked (even if he quits today) more miles this year than 90% of the others who have ever, or will ever attempt a thruhike. This is a sport with no rules. MS is the egghead computer nerd from the chess club who came to that first day of football practice. like it or not guys, HE MADE THE CUT, HE'S ON THE TEAM.

Neo, don't know you, but I like you.

Jack Tarlin

"He's made the cut, he's on the team."

So now let's see him finish the game.

OH, please. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but I noticed first hand he did not ever share the many rolls of toilet paper he carried even when 50 hikers were in need!

:) i like minnesota smith,he is different, but he is a likeable guy.i really hope he complete's his thru hike:cool: neo

MS may be a likable guy. I've never met him, but many folks who have seem to like him, or at least be amused by him.

The irony of the whole thing is... if his political beliefs were put into practice - there would be no Appalachian Trail, or CDT, or PCT, or most any other trail on public lands. Why? Because there wouldn't be any public lands!

That's kinda like complaining about the huts in New Jersey... and then staying in them when you reach New Hampshire.

Because there wouldn't be any public lands! I have some friends, in both the States and Europe, who are street performers and believe that their city should tax local businesses and pay them a stipend to perform on the streets. They have many reasons why this would be a good thing to do. So two large US cities, one on each coast, did something very similar and created venues just for street performances. But my friends won't play in either area because they say it's too controlled.

My point, and I used to have one, is that if MS political beliefs were put into practice he would then change his beliefs.
