What is the most AT mileage you have covered in one day's time? We hiked approx 18 miles yesterday from Deep Gap, NC to Dick's Creek GA..very streneous hike that we should have done over two days.

22.5 trail miles from Pearisburg to Dismal Creek Falls, plus another 2 miles of road-walking to get to the trailhead from the motel, all with 27-pound pack. This was my fourth day out, so I was in some form of backpacking shape after 54 miles, it was a pleasant day in late Spring, there were only 3 real climbs, and the last 6 miles were dead flat along Dismal Creek. I can see how NOBO thru-hikers can crank out the miles once they get to Virginia.

I did Dicks Creek Gap to Deep Gap, plus another 4 miles down Kimsey Creek Trail, in early April 2004. Unless they've re-routed the trail, it's only about 15 trail miles. That first NOBO ascent from Bly Gap was by far the toughest climb from Amicalola.

After I completed my thru in full I went back with a friend that had to fill in a section he missed to go to a wedding. We did 42 (slackpack) in New Hamshire (the 42 north of Gorham), starting at 8 or 9 PM and finishing around 3 PM the next afternoon

52.6 miles in 19 hours (Unicoi Gap to Springer Mountain including a stop at the Whitley Gap Shelter). I was on pace for under 16 hours but spent several hours in some strong thunderstorms with periods of marble-size hail. Pack weight was 17 pounds.

I'm going to attempt the Foothills Trail in under 24 hours sometime in late January or early February.

I agree!!! That has been the hardest climb I've done so far, from Amicalola to Hot Springs, NC. I sure was cussing whoever laid out that trail section. LOL

Wow that's amazing....I would have to say that the trail from deep gap to dick's creek is a little more than 15 miles...although my book said it was 15.6...that last climb from cowart gap to dick's creek...was a hard way to finish out the trail in the dark

My longest day of hiking during my thru in 2003 was right about 26 miles ...and I paid dearly for it that night and the next day. After pushing myself to that level I realized that, at least for me, the short term accomplishment isn't worth the after effect.

I guess it depends a lot on your goals and why you're out there and maybe it's a function of age. But, when I re-hike the AT in 2010 I plan to take my time and rarely, if ever, go over 20 miles/day.

are you friggin' nuts? definitely some of the hardest miles on the Trail. my longest days were the two 33s i pulled in PA (pack weighed about 30 lbs). paid for it with a bad case of monkey butt though.

OK, I'll pull out a couple, if that's OK. I had a bunch of days which were big miles, all of which stand out as some of the best days on the trail. In order from biggest.

39 miles (34 miles were slacked) from Old Orchard Shelter, through Atkins, VA to Davis Path Shelter. This was made possible by the ever awesome Greyfox.

33.8 from Blackrock Hut to Bearface Mtn. in the Shennies with Diesel

32 mi basically from Penn-Mar going North alone, which was awesome.

30 miles from Shaker Campsite in Massachusetts, to Dalton, MA. Powered by the Cookie Lady, the thrill of crossing the Mass Pike (I'm serious), and with awesome thunderstorms!

WEEEEEEE!!!!! I'd do it all again.

71 miles; from about 1 mile south of USFS #222 to the New River Bridge near Pearisburg. (23 hours and 45 minutes) (Legs Against Arms fundraiser for the Nuclear Arms Freeze Campaign)

Five 64-mile 'Damascus by Dawn!' hikes (one with a full pack).

Dartmouth students use to hike to Moosilauke in a day. Probably started at the Olde 50.

I backpacked from Blackrock Hut to Bearfence Mountain Hut in the Shenandoah's during my 2002 thruhike, that is 33.8 miles. My first marathon day was from Hogback Ridge Shelter to Erwin, TN.

I would like to see the Smokies this fall and spend a couple of days backpacking there. I am in Colorado and a few trees have already turned bright gold. I have raked leaves twice. I love it.

A 27.2 mile "out-and-back" hike starting 13.6 miles before Black Horse Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The shuttle (Southpaw) I tried to set up wasn't available because he was out hiking! I carried gear for an overnight since I planned to stay at one of the shelters on the way back, but just kept going. I only had to use my photon for the last 10 minutes. Since I had just hiked it that morning I knew I wouldn't have any trouble staying on the trail at dusk, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. Had sore hips for a few days after that!

We wanted to do our longest day on the shortest day, so when we were attempting our Triple Crown in one year in 2001, on Dec 21st we did 40 miles. We started early, i believe around 5 am (it was still dark for at least 2 hours) but finished up by dark around 5 pm. We were moving pretty good but i remember the trail was quite icy a few times. It was fun!
It was in the Shendoahs which is pretty easy hiking.

In July 1980, I hiked just over 30 miles without a headlamp while carrying a full pack exceding 50 lbs. and wearing Limmer boots weighing over 5 lbs. from George W. Outerbridge Shelter to Kirkridge Shelter. It wasn't really at all difficult for me as the days are long at that time of year.;)

I point this out primarily because some recent posts seem to suggest that such physical feats if not impossible are but stunts or nothing more than the stuff of myth and legend. Not so, and I weighed only about 125 lbs at that time. It really didn't strike me as big deal then, nor does it now.

Many of us practiced in the art of rock-hopping on the A.T. in Pennsylvania think it's some of the easiest hiking on A.T. and wonder what the perennial complaints are all about.

I have some ideas for longer hikes I may attempt here soon, which would be my idea of fun. :)

33 Miles sobo from Wise Shelter to Damascus Virginia. Totally unplanned and spontaneous. I think we were excited to be out of Virginia.

At the end of the day the hardest part was resisting walking in to town on the flat creeper trail.

I once did a really easy day that began at first light and ended slightly less than 30 miles later at Dalton that was motivated by the prospect of pizza, a desire to finish early and get a good night's rest. I had several hours of light left when I finished, ordered and ate an entire pizza and slept well.:)

If you take your longest day and divide by the average mi/day. you get a number > 1 that is the number of average days you hiked. So, Wag Daddy last year hike 50.7 mile one day and took 89 days to hike all 2175 miles. His long days was 2.07 his average, so he hiked a little more than twice his average. A hiker taking just over 7 months would only have to hike 20 miles to do twice their average.

I think the lowest number means you didn't push it and were doing your most enjoyable pace.

My longest hike in 2005 was 1.67 ave.-days.

In 2006, my longest days was shorter, but I took a lot of zero days, and my longest day was 4.7 ave.day. There is no question there was a lot of inconsistency last year.

Did two 26 milers in 2000. The first one I wanted to do a "marathon" just to do it. Promised myself not to do it again. But, I did a u-turn up in Pa and put in an extra 4 or 5 miles on a planned 22 miler, bummer.

I figured out I was 50 miles from town once and walked in. 44 was my longest on the AT I believe. Maybe 20 40s, 100 30s, 200 20s- how many miles is that? I've been drinkin, its all a lie.:) :o

27.5 somwhere in PA...after that, decided long hikes like that were not for me! although there were a few 20's motivated by alcohol, food, tv and showers!
