It depends on what road crossings you want to get a ride from. Your going to have a awful hard time trying to get a ride from Bog Brook Road or East Flagstaff Road in the Bigelow's. I am not saying it is impossible, but this are roads that are not well traveled. Caribou Valley Road could be hard too. Everything slse should be fine. it is like any time you hitch a ride. It is all timing.

What dates are you planning on doing this hike Neo? If your going to do it his year you better do in withing the next month. The nights are getting really chilly up here now.

I hitched this exact road on my thru - took 4 zero days in Caratunk and went to Boston to hang with a buddy for a weekend. I took the bus back to Waterville and at the station told the driver I ~really~ wanted to get off at highway 201 and could he possibly let me off there? He said sure, so I grabbed my pack from under the bus and sat in the front seat holding it in the aisle for the four or five mile ride. He pulled off at the top of the off ramp, I thanked him with a $5 bill, jumped off and walked down the ramp.

I had made a sign that said "Appalachian Trail" and it took me maybe 20 minutes to get a lift that took me all the way to Caratunk.

Hope this helps. Doug

From Waterville to the AT in Caratunk it 65 miles. There are many resturants in Waterville. Waterville is a very big town.

I don't remember, honestly. I had a ride from the hostel in Caratunk to W'ville that dropped me off at some brand of inexpensive hotel before I caught the bus to Boston the following morning. I remember sitting by the little pool in the afternoon drinking beer. Must have been a store. But other than that - I don't know.

Restaurants and lodging are plentiful in Waterville, as Troll indicates. I don't know if there's an outfitter in town, but I bet the Chamber of Commerce (http://www.midmainechamber.com/) could tell you. ( Phone: 207-873-3315)

I'm sure you can find someone to sell you a Jetboil canister. ;)
