Has anyone ever dreamed of walking across the U.S....not on one of the "big three" (AT, Continential Divide, or PCT), but across the US? Years ago, I read Peter Jenkins' "Walk Across America" and can't get it out of my mind since. I'm planning a 2008 AT thru-hike, but I still romantasize about a cross-country walk. Jenkins did his walk back in the early 70s when things were much different (safer, maybe?). :-?

Inspired by Peter Jenkin's book, my sister and her family walked across the U.S.A. from Gainesville ,FL to Portland Oregon in 76-78. They were sponsered by NIKE. They had many adventures and she may still write a book about "The Walking Warriners" someday. I think Jansport provided them with their backpacks. She used to let me use hers on the AT until she saw how worn out it was getting so I bought that old green Jansport that used to hang on the wall at Walasi-yi in GA to replace some of her worn out parts. I have modified the one I bought from Winton and I still use it on the trail to honer her. No $hi+!

I love that book. Great idea to do sometime. First thing's first for me, though. AT 2007.
I've entertained the thought of riding a horse from Maine to Washington or fromthe eastern coast of Canada to British Columbia

Yep, that's exactly where I'm at...AT 2008 first, then go bigger :D
Still a distant dream of mine on my "got to do in my lifetime" list...

As I recall, Spur and Ready walked coast to coast, probably on the ADT a few years ago. I'm sure they will be at the Gathering this weekend.
Walk Across America and The Walk West- 2 Books to get all the way. I read them when they 1st came out and just re-read them this past year. Very inspiring, but I think times have changed, as I felt a twinge of sadness re-reading them and wondering if he would have been helped and welcomed the way he was back than. I hope so…

With all due respect to Lewis and Clark, who I admire greatly, they didn't walk across the United States.
Their journey began in Saint Charles, Missouri, and not on the Atlantic; furthermore, much of their travelling was on horseback, and a great deal of it was by boat.
It was a remarkable achievent, but it was not a "walk across America."
