Well DANG........I posted a congrats on another thread and here Cheesewhiz has his own thread.......

Suppose you don't have a summiting photo for me would ya?

Previous year thru-hikers stay free at my cabin rental at the PA Ruck and eat free too, but you have to be a participant at the thru-hiker bull session :)

Hope to see you soon.

Now you can dream about the PCT.

it was most definiately super weather, it was a better summit day that I could have ever imagined in early October. It was cold none the less with ice hanging from the sign with low 30 temps and 15 to 20 mph gusts.

Congrats, Cheeze! I summited the 8th, just got back home now (and finally registered on this site to boot). You had a good crew up there, good folks all around. I was up there with Johnny K, Tay, Onestep, and two other guys who I hadn't met before but had just caught up w/ me at Baxter.

Hey Cheesewiz, how did the hammock work out for you?

Cheesewhiz
10-15-2006, 08:35
The hammock was GREAT! I used it every night from hot Springs, NC North and only slept in a shelter once. I used the JRB under and top quilts and they were my favorite piece of gear and other hammockers were very jealous. lots of hammocks but nobody else used quilts. I am pretty sure that some of them will be converting now that they are home and have an income!

10-15-2006, 14:04
nice to hear your hammock set up worked for you. what did you use to start out your thru? why did you not use you hammock to start? any advise you can give other hangers who want to hang the whole trail start to finish? i live not to far from you (pottstown,pa.) would love to pick your brain!

SGT Rock
10-15-2006, 14:21
Yes, I would love to hear some pointers. I'm planning an April 6 start and intend to use the hammock the whole way.

Sarge, you hiking in 2007?

No, I get back home around the end of Feburary or begining of March 2007. Not enough time to get retirement done right. I'll get back and start the Army retirement process and do shake down hikes in 2007. I plan to start my thru-hike April 6, 2008. I plan to start at Springer, hang a left on the BMT for about 287 miles, then get back on the AT at Davenport Gap and take it the rest of the way to Mount Katahdin. I'm figuring on 5 months, then get a job

jlb2012
10-15-2006, 17:46
ummm hey SGT Rock - if you start at Springer summit then you would hang a right onto the BMT ;-)

SGT Rock
10-15-2006, 18:09
Left, right - whatever it takes. I was thinking more in general terms, most of the start of the BMT is West of the AT.

Cheesewhiz
10-15-2006, 18:19
I could have started with my hammock, I just never really tested it in temps below 35 deg. and just wanted to be safe. I started with a solo tarptent and a JRB old rag quilt and was very toasty at night but there was a night or two I had to bundle up to go to bed. Best of luck and if ya got any questions feel free!

Hangman
10-15-2006, 18:59
Cheezewiz, hey did you carry a pad at all? could of you used your nest and quilt combo to start end of march in your hammock? was there anywhere that you could not of used your hammock or felt you had to go to ground or shelter? what size tarp did you use? thanks for putting up with these questions. i'm sure that alot of hikers are wondering the same questions. you are an inspiration to all the hammockers out here!!

Hey Cheese whiz,

I checked out that photo show..your pictures and the mustic and how things kind of zoomed in and out.

So I need to know

1) what digital camera did you use to take the pictures?

2) how does one produce this? is there some computer program one could use? This is really neat.

3) I am also wondering how you finished a week behind me when you started out hiking so much ahead of me? many zero days?
