View Full Version : Trash drop, Hot Springs-Erwin? Suggestion.

Would anyone know if there is a place to dump trash between Hot Springs -- Erwin? A trash can at one of the road crossings?

And speaking of trash drops and assuming the info isn't already compiled, but it might be helpful to have a state-by-state listing of places for trash drops on the AT -- something similar to shelter listings.

Indeed, I'd go so far as to suggest that including such info in a trail data book would give it a decided advantage over rival competitors.

Christ on a stick, I thought it was clear, but in case it's not, what I mean by "trash drop" is a legit place to throw out trash (a.k.a. trash can).

Nope. No trash cans between H.S. and Erwin.

You may find such a trash drop at a significant trail crossing or road crossing, but be prepared for it to be overstuffed. If it is, be prepared to carry your trash onward to town or the next legitimate trash drop.

Ultimately you cannot count on anything less than a full-on dumpster for legitimate trash disposal. Trash cans at road crossings are not reliable. You cannot be certain they will be there and be available, so assume that they won't be and be ready to carry on.

There's not one at Spivey Gap? Maybe at the picnic area?

"Trash drops" shouldn't be a major issue, if you pack/repack your food items carefully, eliminating unnecessary packaging rigorously. I repacked almost everything from store packaging into the smallest possible ziplocs, even opening pasta/noodles boxes and their packages into them when I'd resupply, and used dried meat or pouch tuna/salmon rather than any cans. As a result, even on my longest stretch between resupply - 11 days - I only ended up with under a pound of trash, all of which fit into a 1 gallon ziploc without bulging.

Few dumpsters/garbage cans, even at picnic areas, are animal proof, so leaving garbage at them isn't a good idea. Pack it in, pack it out.

New here... I hiked Hot Springs to Allen Gap last weekend. There are animal proof trash cans about 50 yard before crossing 208.

Make sure to visit the Rich Mtn fire tower.. awesome views!
