Yes, Oktoberfest on the AT!

For the month of October you can buy beer right ON THE AT! Sponsored by Becks beer at Bear Mountain State Park the AT goes straight through an Oktoberfest celebration. They’ve got a polka band, taste German cuisine, and BEER!!

This was a delightful surprise last weekend at the middle of my day hike. I was hungry. I wanted something more than trail mix and clif bars. After crossing the Hudson River and entering Bear Mountain State Park I was seeing lots of people. I though, hmm this is a very popular park. Then I saw the tents selling bric-a-brac. Then I hear the polka music. Then several people walked by with beer steins and big smiles. I laughed and walked strait to the food tents and ate a hearty meal of bratwurst, pierogis, and sweet pickled hot red cabbage, and washed it all down with Beck’s Oktoberfest Brew. Excellent!

I hiked into Bear Mountain State Park last on July 4th and the place was packed with picnickers. Once they all left, all their trash remained, spread across the playing field, on the picnic tables, everywhere. I couldn't believe it. Job security, I guess.

Funny how some states are better than others cleaning up after themselves. It's not a regional thing either. In the meantime, I'm living within my own clutter, but at least I'm not throwing it out the window. ;)

But I digress, the topic is about beer! :D

thanks for the info. are the tents only setup on weekends? i assume so. sounds like a neat place to end up after week long section hike....maybe if i did a loop hike it would be hiking from beer to beer......peace, nitewalker

I was wondering where to hike next weekend, now I know.:D
I'm thinking a nice loop hike that includes going over Bear Mountain so I can justify the calories I'll consume at Oktoberfest:rolleyes:
Probably go up the mountain from the south, on the AT, and down on the Major Welsh trail. That'll bring me to the far side of the lake and then it's a stroll in the park to the picinic from there.

Few years ago did a section hike from Rt 17 to across the Hudson, what a nice surprize to see Octoberfest at the end of the hike.
