Apropos of the thread on the Trail Issues forum about boredom while hiking, and the various people who suggested learning about the wildlife, does anyone have recommendations for good, lightweight guides to the flora, fauna, and/or geology of the Trail?

I've seen quick reference field ID cards in Waldenbooks, Borders, etc. They are pretty good, have many species with good info. A little pricey if I recall.

Perhaps not lightweight but a good basic intro to wildflowers commonly found on the A.T.

For the best naturalist field guides for may general subjects like eastern trees, wild edibles, birds, ect., get Peterson Field guide books. The wild edibles is my favorite: It's mindblowing how much you can eat out there.
I also recommend Tom Brown books, which change the perspective of many a hiker's woods' view. He shows you just how intense a walk in the woods can be. Or at least he offers a glimpse.
This is one fricking good book. It weighs nothing if you leave it at home and just think back to it every now and then.
