I have a feeling people get bored quickly with the gear section of their journals. And probably don't keep them up to date.

Regarding TrailJournals.com....

How exactly do you update your entries? Via website, or can you email updates?

I was just reading Skeemer's journal (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=29121). In this (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=29121) entry he mentions using his PocketMail device to update his journal. Any ideas how he is doing that?

He probably has a transcriber at home that recieves his "pocket-mailed" journals and then enters them on the trailjournals website. The site can help journalists find transcribers I believe.

WHen using a pocketmail device, the info is sent to an email address and then "someone" cuts & paste the emails to the journal website.

Too bad TJ hasn't come up with a method to automate the whole thing.

The guys are bright and inventive... Anyone willing to "finance" them? To date they are doing this all on their own with only a few small voluntary donations from someof the users.

They do the best they can with the programs they can afford.:)

27 pounds seems a little light...

Most people do not list everything in their pack just the major items. Hikers should only need 3-4 days of food to reach Neal's Gap and could start with 1 liter of water due to the abundance on the trail for the first 8 miles.

Jitterbug & Hoover left on May 1ST, her pack weight was 27lbs and his was 29lbs., both included 4 days of food and 2 liters of water. That means the base weights must be around 15 and 17 lbs. which is attainable. It's amazin how most people start achieving these base weights as they continue to ship stuff home, along the way, to reduce pack weight.

Reading the shelter registers during thru-hiking season last year and this year I continue to read the common message, "I've got to figure out some way to reduce this pack weight !!"

Oh ok, I thought they had more food & water than that. But don't forget fuel!

I'm down to 12lbs Base Gear weight (excluding pack).
I have a 15oz pack, but I use a 5lb pack.
5 days food @2.5lbs is 12.5lbs.
Methenol 1lb.
2L water ~4lb.

So I'm coming in at 34.5lbs for a 5day Packweight.

My anchors include a 2lb fleece jacket, and 1.5lb Camera.
Oh, and my 5lb Pack (which rides better after 10miles than my 15oz pack despite the extra 4lbs).

I may swap cameras, but I really enjoy the one I have...

RH;

How do you carry your camera?

RH, if you use the 5lb pack you STILL only have a 17lb. baseweight, and if you plan on doing the approach trail, you would add 4 days food (10lbs), 1lb fuel, and could start with 1 quart water (2lbs) which would put you at a very respectful 30lbs.

Well on day hikes I carry it in one of my waterbottle pockets, but when I'm out overnight it goes in my pack (fuel bottle fills the pocket instead). I do keep it at the very top though, so its a matter of swinging the pack around, loosening the two draw-strings, and whipping it out. I'm hesitant to put a 20oz coke bottle of methenol in my pack, but on rare occasions I do (probably stupid).

I still may go for a slightly lighter pack before I hit Springer in 11months.
