Hey Medicine Man, How did you find that or get google maps to find it? I checked a few shelters, Each comes up with a links type page with many different types of maps. Very Cool I bookmarked the site and I am sure I'll play with it more than I really want to admit :)

Thanks
Sandy B

i started here:

and went from there....
topozone used to give you a UTM wherever the cursor was, so i was looking for internet maps that give you coordinates.

I did the same thing on Microsoft Streets and Trips. I located an excel spread sheet of the shelter locations and just imported them. Now, I change the color of the push pin when I stay at one or just stop there.

I use this link http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php?Number=21124 to find the shelters... if you left-click on a mark, it gives you the info about the shelter. (must have Google Earth to use)

In preparation for my hike this year I made this: http://arch-viz.com/hike/at.htm

Not quite complete, and not ever really implemented during my hike. (Thanks to a pair of broken ankles, lots of things were not "quite complete" about my hike ) The idea was for my transcriber to turn on each of the shelters and update its tag to point to the trailjournals.com entry for that day. The map draws the red line to the last shelter visited, while the thick orange line shows the trail's path. If you jump down south to the first few shelters you can see how it was supposed to work. Click on one and it will show the shelter name, the date of stay, and a link to the trailjournal entry. Updating it turned out to be too much of a hassle, so I just turned all the shelters on.

The trail center-line and shelter coord's are from the ATC. There's some goofiness to the trail data up north that I never quite fixed.

Anybody who wants to steal the code for the page to use on their own site is welcome to it. All the data is stored in the xml file....just opening it in notepad and poking around inside it will probably be pretty clear to most people how it works. Pretty simple stuff really.

I might work on improving it this winter, in preparation for next year's possible hike.

Pretty cool stuff here! Since I stopped at all but a handfull of the shelters this season to collect information for the ATC, this is provides another interesting perspective on the journey. Thanks for sharing these maps.
